I like this pattern for two reasons:
- The wing (deer hair) is swept rearward, similar to the natural.
- The hackle is clipped at the bottom, to allow the fly to float low on the surface.
I like this pattern for two reasons:
Byron,
Such a beautiful tie, what size hook would you use for this pattern?
Alberto
Thank you! For the Small Western, I would probably use a 12. This one happens to be a 14. I think either might work.
I tied some March Browns up like that but used partridge for the hackle. I don’t clip the partridge however I do pull it up so it looks a little more leggy on the water. Haven’t fished them yet
Nicely designed and tied.
Thanks Bob, but not my design…Although, I do the same thing using EP Fibers in lieu of dyed deer hair.
What’s the rib on that Byron?
Do you find the fish teeth tearing/ fraying uni stretch. I have some at home but don’t often use it.
No, I don’t. The “thread” is both stretched and twisted when wrapped.
I might add that I use it on all my Cracklebacks as the bodies. The best thing about it, in that case, especially, is that you can control the body thickness by just controlling the “stretch” as you wrap the body.
My experiences, anyway.
Very nice tie there Byron…
Thanks Doug. Any idea when you might be in the Yellowstone area? I will be there with my son from mid-June thru end of June.
I like your tie a lot. I’ve tied mine with much more deer hair, but I think yours is a much better imitation. I’ll try your sparse wing this year.
Oddly, I’ve done quite well with Royal Wulffs during this hatch. Sometimes better than with imitative patterns.
Byron - I will be there from July 19th thru Aug. 20th … one of these years I hope we can connect… Doug
Byron, I tied a fly very similar to this but for a march brown imitation. I used partridge for the hackle. Gave a few to my brother who fished them today. He said it greatly out performed more traditional styles. Thanks for showing this fly, paid off today. Now I just need to get out and try for myself
You have created and tested a good pattern for yourself!!
Good for you. Good to hear.
Great pattern Byron and nicely tied as well. I tie a swept wing CDC pattern for Eastern Drakes, but will have to give that pattern a try as well. My change some colors and try it on the Slate Drakes?
