Hiked into a pond. This is one of my favorite ponds. It is about 80 yards wide and 100 yards long. Deepest water in the pond wanders along the old stream bed.
Our 2 year drought had dropped the water level just short of four feet. The recent rains have raised the level up about half of that. Also washed a lot of dust and dirt into the ponds. The water is colored about like chocolate milk diluted half and half with milk. The owed water levels let the ponds weeds grow farther out and higher now.
But it time to be on a pond and put some flies in the water. Can’t always wait for the best conditions. Started with a hares ear type fly and a gilly. The first half dozen casts taught me how long I could let the fly drop as I retrieved weeds.
Finally got the depth right and tarted hooking some fish. Even landed a few of them. Others seemed to dive into the weeds and that was the end of them being hooked. Tried holding the rod higher to see if that would keep them out of the weeds.
Nothing seemed to work, but I was getting a few fish. Moved around the pod and got to some deeper water. Started landing a few more fish before they could get deep enough to get into the weeds.
The wind had been getting stronger and go to the point where I could not see the strikes that had been fairly light. But I had been having a good time and had a few fish for supper and to share. My catch rate was less than 10%, why fishig and catching are different.
Hope you can get out on the water.
