From my old bald head

This is an untested experiment on my part. The tail is obviously marabou, the body mylar tubing with a strip of foam on top and 3 Daisy BB’s in the belly. The idea is a point up minnow streamer type fly. I call it a BB Minnow. There are several coats of Sally’s Hard as Nails on the body.

It looks good. Have you tried casting it and seeing how it retrieves yet? If it doesn’t run belly down try a slight bendback to encourage the bb’s to stay in the right place.

Gee, from the title of your posting, I thought you were going to use some of the few remaining hairs you have on a pattern;) There is also a hook called the predator hook by Ahrex that lends itself to tying keel down patterns. Very high quality hooks with lots of different applications not available to most hook styles. It’s used a lot with swimbait style patterns but it is very versatile. Just a thought…

If my memory is correct that is similar to a keel hook and not to far from some of the worm hooks bass fishermen use. This was a cheap Eagle Claw “Cricket” hook, basically a long shank Aberdeen hook. I have had good success using Aberdeen landing a few good sized grass carp, bass and catfish. Never had on bend or break on me so far.

RBC, I tied another version with the strip of foam tied directly to the hook before putting the tubing in place, that doesn’t leave much room for the BB’s to move, but I really need to go give them a try. I came up with the idea making some for a friend who creek fishes in south Mississippi. They have some great creeks down there, dark water, spring fed with lot of logs in them. I was trying for some a little less snag resistant than a wooly bugger or similar fly. On a side note, he told me snakes weren’t a problem any more, the alligators ate them since their population increased.

uncle jess, nice pattern. about 20 or so years ago I developed a shrimp pattern with a rattle in it.i was able to purchase small glass rattles form bass pro I think, they were called worm rattles. if you can find some you could super glue one to the shank of the hook. might be easier than the tubbing with bb’s in it , and it would give you a good rattle.

nice pattern

Thanks for the suggestion John. I have a Bass Pro Store a few miles south of me, I may have to give that a shot. I carried my not yet 3 year old granddaughter to the store. She decided Papaw needs a bass boat.

i took a look thru my stuff and found, bass pro shops xps worm rattles, they came in three sizes, 3, 4, and 5mm, also fond some made by p & p rattle co. by the way, your grand daughter sounds like a pretty smart little girl

John, I put her in the driver’s seat of a couple of bass boats and she loved being able to turn the wheel a little. She wasn’t as taken with the fish in the aquarium or the various animals mounts as I expected. She’s the only natural grandchild we will ever have, I may spoil her a little bit. She may catch her first fish next spring, her mom caught her first when she was 3. If I were logging on to FAOL for the first time my ID would be Katy’s Papaw.

sounds like your a lucky guy
