sometimes you get a mixed bag…
thanks for posting the pictures, sometimes I think I am living on the wrong coast
Eric
Great pictures and it looks like you had a lot of fun! A link to a step-by-step tying instructions for that frog pattern would be nice.
glad you like them…thats the biggest tarpon for me on my 6wt so far…the frogs and hybrid frog poppers were designed to get tarpon however my experiment was a little off form…everything else like them but I lost faith once the bigger tarpon showed…still working on that…the frogs are made without using a vice or thread…I call them the Miami Viceless Frog…the problem is I either need to glue it better or use thread on the hook to secure the pattern…a bass stripped the frog off the hook a couple times…the tarpon was caught on a Whisperering Bamboozler, my latest tarpon go to fly
Very similar…
It’s a shame that we can’t get tarpon stocked in Percy Priest Resevoir…
Ed
Cool tarpon shots! I absolutely love how those southern bluegills look! So dark…
Great post bfw, i was just wondering yesterday what you were up to. 6 wt tarpon…sweet ! I’m like Eric-wd in a way…wrong coast maybe.
Cheers,
MontanaMoose
I just got back from the Everglades…I worked the bass and panfish nice and proper with the Miami Viceless Frog for about 4hrs…I got tired of unhooking fish…even with a 1/0 saltwater hook the gills were roughing it up really bad and the bass and pickeral had their way with it…finally a bowfin came up and put a real hurting on it…legs destroyed but it was very fun…maybe I will downliad the pictures if interested
Well i am and pickeral in the Everglades…who knew…how big do those get? I’ve only caught small ones in creeks in NJ years and years ago.
Cheers,
MontanaMoose
here is a mixed bag from this morning…guess I didnt get any pickerel pictures but I did find a gar picture…I see some fairly good sized gar but pickerel are not so big but millions of them
The Gar shot is cool…plus the battered frog pic. Thanks bfw…yes, the creek i fisned in NJ with flies was packed with small pickeral and they’d hit anything.
Cheers,
MontanaMoose
I wanna see the bowfin!!
Also…that sunfish…:
What IS IT?? Looks like a bluegill body, but I’ve NEVER seen one with spots like that!
Also…your Miami Viceless Frog… What a sweet looking pattern, and I love the name! Makes me chuckle…
heres a similar one with recipe and instructions.
thats a great link Normand…much more work than what I put into them but very simular design on the legs, practically identical…those are very cool looking and there are some killer bass bug poppers out there…I used the leftover materials I found while cleaning my nasty tying table…I am trying to become better at bass fishing while the flats heal so I am fishing lots of freshwater…I am still determined to get a tarpon on one and the wind looks good enough tomorrow…lost 3 in the last 2 days…those frogs have the same colors that I use for the freshwater tarpon…mine are not worthy of tying info compared to those in the link…actually I dont use a vice or thread so they are not tied but assembled using basically scissors and glue
We’d love to have the instructions as a Fly of the Week. Please?
Hugs,
LF
OK BFW, you have your homework assignment for this weekend. At least one each, picture(s) of pickeral and bowfin.
Oh yeah, that and a Fly of the Week article for LadyFisher.
(Watch out for her hugs, last time she hugged me she almost dislocated my spine. That was BEFORE the surgery on her shoulder. I wouldn’t want her mad at me.)
Ed
who can say no to Ladyfisher? in the next couple days I will have tying pictures…I am out of foam and hooks but will get some tomorrow…I will even get green instead of floro yellow like I used before…as far as a gar picture and a pickerel I cant promise anything but the odds are very good that I wont have a choice once on the Everglades…I have seen a really big gar in the lake in the same area for a few days…its HUGE, I would say easy 50lbs but it only surfaces occasionally…I have my eye out for it
also Dave, I have no idea what that fish is and I pride myself on knowing the area and species but I have never seen anything like it…I got several of them in the same area…perhaps a hybrid?
The black spots in the scales are the giveaway. Darned shame I can’t remember which species it’s a giveaway for.
Ed
I guess it could be either a big “Flier”, or a big “Spotted Sunfish”. After doing a search for both of those species, I’m going with the “Spotted Sunfish”. You should get those pictures “out there” online…cuz there weren’t really many GOOD pictures of Spotted Sunfish available! Cool catch.
