It’s deer season in Nebraska and that means that I have a fresh supply of tying material. However, I still have some of last year’s skin that I have not used. Since I doubt seriously that I can use 2 skins, I am giving some of last year’s skin away. The first 5 people that post on this thread will recive a chunk of deer hide. This hide has been scraped and was dried and cured using salt and borax and is free of bugs to the best of my knowledge. When posting it might help to include what type of fly you are planning on tying as that will help me to send you a piece that is suitable for your needs.
Hi…I am looking for something to tie comparadun type flies.

Jeff
Got mine today. Two nice big pieces. Thanks again hugefish. What’s your procedure for scraping the flesh side? It’s so clean it looks like suede.
Roy
I process the hair by first loading the fresh hide down with a mixture of salt and borax. my rule is to cover the whole hide with a layer of salt mix then later as the mix draws out the water I go back and soak up the wet spots with more mix. in the end the skin is dry and crispy. then i use a heavy bladed dull knife to scrape the excess flesh ands fat off of the hide. Timme consuming but relatively easy.
BTW: all of you who recieved deer hair should check out the section on kool-aid dying. It’s really easy and works great.
