free style spey

No Name…I said I would tie a few more today here is the second one, this one was tied under the influence of Rum Steven H. M. …

Newfie,

I think you’ve got the wings down pat. Nice looking fly. What kind of floss are you using for the body?

REE

The orange stuff is unknown single strand, but it’s properties felt different than the brown on the front, it didn’t feel as soft or limber as the front floss on the fly which was Danville’s 4 strand, of course I only used the one strand of brown on the fly.

thanks
Mike

I thought you mainly fished the Brown’s in rivers in town? They look like good Humber River salmon flies to me

Nice going Mike!!!

Happy Trails!
Ronn

Thanks Ron, no Brad, I fish the the inner city rivers for most of the spring and most of the fall when the other seasons are not yet open or have since closed.

Only fished the Humber as a kid when I lived in Steady brook, of course it wasn’t legal, but I was young (11) and laws didn’t mean much then, .

I have tied 6 of these spey wing flies to date, and this was the last one and by far the best wing. I didn’t have any of those Partridge hooks left, so I just tied this one on a huge streamer hook. The floss work is alittle rough and a bit hurried, but the wing, other than being a little low set, is actually the tent style.

cheers
Mike

Newfie,
You may have had even better results (if that is possible) under the influence of a bottle of Glen Grant.

Thanks, I may test your theory one of these days, .

Hi Newfoundlander,

Those are very nice looking flies! Do you intend on fishing them? I would think a Spey version of a Blue Charm or Cosseboom might do quite well.

Coming from Nova Scotia myself, I’ve tied both in smaller sizes (size 10 2x shank hooks) and have had luck on lake based rainbows with them here in New Zealand. However, I’ve not done them Spey style, though I may give it a go.

Anyway, just wanted to say I really like the look of your ties.

I would certainly fish 'em if I get the chance, only on some of the larger rivers though.
The river I fish locally is too small I think for such big flies, they only like 'em usually in a size 8, 10 and smaller of course.

Thanks for the comments.

Hi Newfoundlander,

Inspired by your creations, I tied up a “free-style spey” on a size 10 2x shank. The wing I produced is an … interesting interpretation of the spey wing style! but it was fun to try. I’ll probably tie up a few for the box and hopefully my winging will improve. Anyway, having made the attempt I’m even more impressed with your outputs.

Yeah, It’s tough business, and before I got the Bronze Mallard from Ron Lucas, I never had much success with it at all.
Not all wings pictured in those posts are perfect, but they are acceptable.
The only good wing, is the one with the Blue body on a streamer hook.
These are tough, but at least they are easier than the full style married wings you see on Atlantic and Steelhead flies and a good place to start for sure.
Keep with it, a couple of my best wings just more or less fell into place by accident when I lost my grip, If you don’t like it reset it.
Like I said I sat there for about a hour and a half trying to set the wing on the greenhighlander type fly.
Most other wings took about 10 to 20 minutes, .
