I have mailed out my fair share of furled leaders to friends here on FAOL. I’ve also given a bunch away stream side. Were it not for Jack Hise showing me what Kathy Scott had shared with him, none of this would have happened. I tell people about Kathy Scott, and the availability of her DVD … even when I give the leaders away on the Tongue River in Wyoming! I refuse to sell them. And, yes, I have purchased my own copy of Kathy’s DVD, after my original copy (that had been a gift) met with uncertain fate. I cherish Kathy’s friendship, skills and knowledge.
If I can’t share who I am and what I have, I am nothing.

Lew, you know we’re going fishing in the next week or so and I have just the leader for you to use on my favorite spring. Since learning to “roll my own” I use nothing but furled. I participated in a recent Furled Leader swap and was pleased and amazed at the variety of leaders turned out by different people on FAOL, and I can’t wait to try them all, but I have just the perfect one for you. Two generous people from this board sent me furled leaders to try. I didn’t even know what a furled leader was. If it wasn’t for them I never would have purchased Kathy’s DVD.
A couple of the great folks here at FAOL have given me some furled leaders, and as you all know they are fabulous. After reading through this thread, I’ve been mad, offended, and now glad… the whole deal. All I have to add is since joining up here I’ve met many very generous folks, and have witnessed countless acts of kindness and selfless generosity over and over. It’s what true sportsmanship and humanity is about. I’d like to think of myself as generous, and I’ve had many opportunities to help others, and be generous here, and always do when I’m out fishing…If any of that changes one whit, I’ll be truly disappointed…though, know without a hint of doubt it will not.
So… I add this… This is a group I am truly proud of, and proud to be a part of…

I have personally witnessed Jack Hise give “the spiel” on furled leaders, INCLUDING KATHIE’S DVD on any number of occaisions. Jack doesn’t “just drool when someone says they want a furled leader”, he spends quite a bit on materials. He spends quite a bit of time making them. Jack is a very nice guy, teasing from NBOF notwithstanding
It does not take a genius or a journeman spinner to make a furled leader. geeeeze
I have been the benefactor of many freebies on here…which would make one wonder why I say this. But it has been going on for so long that everyone knows if they make a post about furled leaders a bunch of people will be ever so happy to send them a few…free. Heck they will probably get enough for a few years of fishing. Meanwhile taking away the business from people who sell them…because people don’t have to buy them…they get them here for free.
Generosity? I don’t think so. It’s showing off. Sticking out your lapel to say see here…look what “I” can do. One of you even has a colored photo of himself on a card for furled leaders! I would not go to that much trouble and expense unless I was going into the business. Wow…
There are a number of folks on this site whom I consider to be better people than I am and it is because the do things for other people without asking for anything in return. I can only presume that you are against charitable giving in general. Let the hungry starve? Nobody could actually care about people on another planet, so they just give money for feeding them to stroke their own egos? After all, there is no such thing as love, decency, or kindness anywhere within our species, is there? Nope, it all about Numero Uno. <expletive deleted> shame that there are about 6 billion Numero Unos on the planet.
I doubt very very much that you guys are telling the recepient much about furled leaders. Perhaps you are. I bet though…that you are just sending them out…for the credits. And Kathy gets NONE>
I am not suggesting banning generosity. I am suggesting good people get credit where credit is due…and in the case of furled leaders it is far from happening. It has in fact been undermined.
This is supposed to be a board called “Sound Off”…about gripes, complaints, and attaboys. Therefore I think I have the right to post this opinion.
So I stated my opinion. In the case of Warren…sorry if it rubs him the wrong way…I don’t include him in the above opinions. Warren is cool. I have probably made myself his enemy…but I hope not.
I am just stating an opinion that people have all taken up the bandwagon to make furled leaders and then act like they are the masters at it. Meanwhile Kathy sells them…but for sure not as many because they are so easily available on here.

Why does ANY person on this board need a free furled leader? They are available many places now. Many people sell them. And thank you Jack Hise for personally showing me how to make them and giving me lessons on how to make furled leaders.
Why do grocery stores and manufacturers give out free samples? To entice potential customers to TRY THE PRODUCT. I think that Jack has an agreement with at least one fly shop to produce furled leaders for sale. Before you scream that Kathie Scott should get royalties for selling him the DVD that taught him how, how many textbook writers have YOU given royalties to for the things that you learned from their works? Do you still give gifts to your old teachers to repay them for what they taught you?
I made a very short demo of how to make one at our fly club mtg…only because the Pres asked me to. Nobody here where I live makes them but me. I was asked to make them and sell them to people in the club. I replied no thank you. I provided Kathy Scott’s contact info and told them they can either buy her instructional CD or they can buy them from HER. I would not make them and sell them to our club members. I just make them for myself. and NOBODY else. And her cd is not copy protected. But I did not make a copy and give it to our club for it’s library. If the club wants that instruction they can buy it from Kat. Not getting a free one from me.
I just state my opinions and let the chips fall…or stick into my skin a little bit…depending on how hard they are thrown at me…fall where they may.
I just think too many people are sticking out their lapels to say hey look at me…and Kathy not getting her fair share.
But I could be wrong. That’s for sure. I have been wrong so many times on here and due to good people correcting me I have learnd from my mistakes. Maybe this is another one.
I often stick my neck out…and get it cut off. It hurts sometimes.
I am quite sure my goose is cooked very well done on her now.
Just looks that way to me.
Having said all of that…'me thinks I am probably all wrong. Because of the names of the people I see sending them out…ARE GOOD people and share all the time. It is perhaps indeed just their generosity. I know the feeling. I am always showing someone how, or giving someone something…just to help them learn or know…because they don’t know how. Just to help them along.
So I hope I am in fact totally wrong. I like the generosity side of it. I’ll just take the hits for being wrong again. It isn’t the first time. Probably won’t be the last. I have no doubt “I” will be banned from the website someday. It is just a matter of time.
But I sure would like to see Ms. Kathy Scott get more kudos on here. I admit she has obtained a lot though.
Now let’s take this same string of logic and apply it to fly-tying etc…
I don’t furl leaders, but I missed a chance to go fishing because I had given away so many of my flies. I guess under your regime, I would just be biding my time await a “short, sharp shock”…

I already realized my mistake, and dutifully apologized for it.
Once is enough. I am not going to apologize again, nor stick my tail between my legs.
I state my opinions oh here…boaf good and bad. And I get beat up for it once in awhile, which I usually deserve.
But once is enough. If you don’t like it…Frankly Scarlet…I don’t give a d…m.
However, having said that…I agree 100% with your privilige to state your opinion on this Sound Off board just as I have. And I am glad you did.
Shore got a lot a people taling on the board though. Really stirred the pot. I am mad at me though…for causing so much anger and bad feelings. Not at me…I don’t mind enemies, I think everyone should have a few. But for causing bad feelings in other people and I was wrong… I’m sorry I did that. If I thought I was still correct I would not mind. But I was wrong…and caused a lot of anger and pent up, spent up negative feelings. I am NOT very happy with myself for having done this. So I have a big mad going on at me. I don’t know how long it will take for this mad to go away.
I shall now go into hiding. I shall take my hiney and put it in the fridge and let it cool down for awhile.

Thanks for your honesty as well as manning up. When I read the post I disagreed with your position, but I did not think you were now an enemy of mine just because I didn’t agree with you. Your’e right, the sound off section is for messages of this flavor. You “sounded-off” and others did as well. You had a change of heart and made a sincere apology to everyone who may have taken offense. In my mind, it’s settled. Your a big man in my opinion who can see more than one perspective.

hi folks until i had a opportunity to fish with bugman one day i didnot know what a furled leader was but out of his good heart he gave me one that he had made it was the coolest thing i had ever put on a fly line. now if someone would tell me how to order kathy’s dvd i would.
Not right now.
But I’m thinking maybe sometime next August somewhere in South Dakota chasing the elusive No Trouts or maybe early September in Wyoming after bending a big cutthroat over my knee, I might find myself streamside needing a fresh one …

I got mine at Gates AuSable Lodge a couple of years ago. He still has some in the shop. 
They also sell Kathy’s leaders there. Saves the hassle. LOL

I can’t believe what I have just read. Some years back Kathy sent me a couple of leaders (for free) to try. I recently bought another one from her. And have been given a few (again recently) by some members here on FAOL. Do I feel guilty? Nope not one bit.

FWIW, just on THIS thread alone, I think we have at least FOUR “generations” of furlers, IF you include Kathy.
I learned from Jack Hise, who learned from Kathy. There is someone else who posted on THIS thread who I sent a free leader to (just like the ones I did for the swap), for nothing more than for him to try out (even though he did buy some from me afterward), and it sounds like he is going to give it a try now. I was still pretty new at the whole furling thing when I sent him that leader (I still am).
Also, I have now given away a lot more furled leaders than have been given to me. THAT is the spirit I think Kathy had in mind when she made her DVD.
