Frederick, MD Fly fishing

I moved up here last yr in Feb and had a little boy the same month. Never had the chance to go.

Anyone on here from the area and knows of some good spots to throw the fly out with clearing room? I am willing to go as far as Cumberland maybe Garrett County before the season drops…

One other question from an Amateur… what is a good fly to use in April?

Thanks!

Big Hunting Creek is just up the road from you in Thurmont, Md. Beautiful surroundings and great flyfishing to boot. Early spring and fall are the best times in my estimation. Summer heat causes some stress to occur. The Catoctin Mtns also have some great trails for hiking.
Or you can drive about an hour north of Thurmont and enjoy some fantastic Penna fishing in the many south central area streams.

East Antietam Creek in Waynesboro, PA.

The Gunpowder off Rte I 83 north of Baltimore.

Beaver Creek east of Hagerstown, MD. A very short stretch of really nice water right under Rte. 70. It would be just about local to you. Yeah, it’s REALLY NOISY.

The MD department of fish/game/whatever used to have a good site with a page of maps with the stocked streams.

PA has the same thing, county by county.

You couldn’t live in a better place, IMHO!

Adams (standard & parachute)
Red Quill spinner
Elk Hair Caddis
Mr. Rapidan
Au Sable Wulff

By the way, I sent you a PM last year with some info on stream in your area. Do you still have it? If not, let me know and I’ll re-send.

Scott

When the weather gets warmer, don’t overlook the Monocacy for smallies.
