If you look up at the top of this page under Flyanglers Online you will see “The fraternity of fly fishers”.
To me this means that all members of FAOL are part of the fraternity and should be treated equal.
Thus my “grip” is the policy of giving away items only to select members of the fraternity.
I realize that the giver/seller has every right to do this but it just bugs the dickens out of me to see some members treated different than others.
They are giving them away to members that post and improve the community. While I read the forum every day I rarely post unless I have something to add.
I don’t have any gripes about people giving things to certain categories of members - that is their perogative.
I do; however, have a question about the membership categories simply out of curiosity. If junior and senior members participate more often (according to one of the posts from someone giving stuff away), then why do junior members have fewer posts than plain ol’ “members?” Apparently I am missing something since this does not make sense.
Your membership category changes based on the number of posts you have made. It’s a feature built into the software and has nothing to do with anything else like knowledge or experience or exceeding good looks. I’m a senior member and still can’t fish worth a hoot, and I ain’t nothin to look at either. When I go into McDonalds they still charge me $.65 for a Senior Coffee, even after I tell them I’m a Senior Member on FAOL. Go figure…
The guy is doing something nice and giving stuff away. My goodness folks. It would make me think twice before giving anything away here.
By the way, when I read Junior and Senior members, I kind of assumed he was talking age (young / under 18 and senior i.e over 60).
If he wanted to limit his giveaway to only those who are bald and wear glasses, what’s it to anyone? It’s his stuff and he is trying to do something nice.
If you go back and read the Clarification of Eligibility that I posted, you will see that I made an error at the outset. It was my recollection that Members had posted 50 or less times, Junior Members had posted between 51 and 100 times, and Senior Members had posted over 100 times. Actually, Junior Members have typically posted less that 25-30 times and Members have posted more than that, but less than 100.
It was also my recollection that there are number of people who post here only to take advantage ( and I don’t mean that in a negative way ) of the Things For Sale Forum. Those people do not participate in and contribute to the discussions that make this place what it is.
I wanted to thank the folks that participate and contribute to discussions on the BB on a regular basis, so I did decide to “discriminate” in a way that gave those that bring the most to have the best chance to win a drawing. It turned out that my faulty memory ( in retrospect I should have checked the criteria more closely ) caused a lot of people I intended to include to be excluded.
In “investigating” the member designations, it struck me that the designations are not entirely consistent as to the number of posts that determine what one’s designation is. So to be fair, I just threw the drawings open to all members who joined before my original post.
It’s unfortunate, but you can’t change the Title of a thread. You can edit the threads / posts, but not the Title. So we are all stuck with Titles on the four threads that don’t reflect what I wanted to do in thanking folks on this Bulletin Board. Regardless of the Titles, there are Junior Members, Members and Senior Members signing up.
You are certainly entitled to your “rant.” Looking at the silver lining, maybe reading your comments and this response will help some people realize that they are eligible and they will enter. Maybe someone will win, because of your thread, who otherwise wouldn’t have entered. It gives me another chance to invite people in - so from my point of view its a win-win-win situation.
No John it was not directed at you personally but at the policy of making a selection criteria for giving away things. By doing this you run the risk of alienating those who do not meet the criteria and having them drop out from the fraternity all together. That was my point, nothing more, nothing less.
I commend you for your generosity and support of FAOL.
