Found Goose Biots:

In by email:

I discovered goose biots at the local Hobby Lobby, a packet of 34 of colors, black, white, red, blue, green and yellow all for $1.99. The last I bought from a Fly Materials catalogue cost me 3 for $1.80. Peacock swords are also vailable along with other interesting feathers. Check it out Okey Payne

WOW! Thanks a bunch for the tip! I haven’t been able to find Peacock swords locally so I will check our hobby lobby.

thanks, nenbran

PS: Ladyfisher, you are a wonderful writer!!

i have about 15 dozen peacock swords, some one gave me a ton of peacock, so if you are ever in town, i will give you a bunch  you can also get doll eyes at craft stores for a great price!

haha thanks! don’t think i’ll be visiting Montana anytime soon tho. :frowning:

i got goose bitos for even cheaper !!! actually free  at the local lake !
but they are only natural colors

I love a find like that. Look before you buy I have found some hobby shop / craft store feathers to be more damaged. I just got a pound of white turkey flats that were better that I can get through most suppliers at a craft store so you never know.

thanx for the tip montana moose
rick z also suggested i use easter egg die to die them!

I hear Kool-Aid is used also ! And then there’s Rit Dye too. What about food coloring? I’m going to try coffee on some creme colored hackle, see what happens…stains everything I spill it on…should work on feathers too !

Cheers,

Just dyed some white hackle yellow using kool aid. Worked great and was simple also. Here is the link to the instructions I used:

Some of the Hobby store stuff will stain your fly box. :frowning:

I have had some of the “marabou” change colour after I dragged it through the water a few times.

A way to check if the dye will run is to wet it and put on a piece of paper towel and let it sit there until dry and then lift it off… 8)
