i was out rumaging through some of the nooks and crannies of the shop and found a old fly reel that looks like a pflugear medalist but is stamped k-mart. Now I never saw dad fly fish so it has to be at least 34 years old maybe. anyone know anything about these reels? Were they made by pflugear for k-mart?
that reel is one of numerous Medalist copies made in Japan and elsewhere. Pflueger still makes the Medalist and the copies are long out of production.

I remember those reels when KMart sold them. For some reason the name Kingfisher sticks in my head. You’re right the inerds looked just like a Medalist. Thirty years ago Medalists were selling for about $15 the KMart reel for less than 1/2 that.
I had one 27 years ago. The handle broke off and most of the screws fell out, in the first season. The next year I bought a real Medalist.

I have an old Orvis Madison that looks like a medalist…I believe it was made by Pflueger when they had a plant in Fayetteville, Arkansas in the 70’s…Dano
The Orvis Madison is not a import knock off. It is genuine Pflueger and good quality, yours is probably maroon in color.
