Is there a prefered method to search the fly archive?
I generally just go to the page and scroll up and down 'till I find what I’m looking for.
There has to be a better way.
What search engine are you using?
In most search engines (I use Firefox, which I think is best), you can just hit CTRL (or the Apple key on a Mac) + F and then type in what you want to search for.
Thanks Poke 'em
I wasn’t sure that was going to help, but sure enough…
Now all I have to do is remember all the names
Also the “Search” feature on the main page does well for the archives.
Dunno if this will help dudley, but you could try this process, part of which you already know, I’m sure. Click on ‘Fly tying’, then ‘Fly Archives’, then ‘Old Flies Stuff’, scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on the large print ‘Archives Of Old Flies’ and you will see a list. 'Scuse please if you’ve already seen that but thought I better toss it out there !
Cheers,

I have a question about the Archive. How come sometimes when I try to select a pattern, it says " Looks like that one got away. The requested URL was not found on this server."
Are these patterns discontinued?
I believe REE answered that here…
That’s what I’ve been doing… not very efficent
For patterns in Fly of the Week, Old Flies, or even the instructional series (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Tying and the Atlantic Tying series) the best way is to use the SEARCH from the front/main page, top left of the menu, or from the footer at the bottom of every page of FAOL (no, not the Bulletin Board). Type in the name of the fly and hit enter.
You may get a lot more than you think, so scroll down to the bottom where it asks Match Any Word, or Match ALL words, select Match ALL words. This really narrows your search down.
If you get a “sorry not found” from the Search on FAOL for a fly, please send me an email and let me know which fly is missing - or the page which was supposed to come up.
The archives for FAOL are huge, really thousands of pages. We try to keep everything in order and not lose valuable information. But it happens. If it happens to you, please let me know - maybe I can fix it. S
Maybe I am just inept but I have a terrible time with searching the FOTW archives. Example: search for parachute caddis.
I enter it in the search box and I get a ton of hits. Go to the bottom of the page and select “match all words” and search again. This time I get fewer hits but not much help. The top four returns are all for fly of the week archives with a hit score of 100% but clicking on any one of them just gives you the whole archive list. I have to assume its in there somewhere but who knows where. No clue on how to proceed.
Can anyone solve this mystery
Yup, I got 51 references to “parachute caddis.” Which one do you want. The term “parachute caddis.” is mentioned that many times. If you want the fly, try going to the fly of the week or old fly archives.
Yup, thats my problem. There were 51 hits. In fact the #1 hit does NOT contain the term “parachute caddis”. It is the index page for the FOTW archives and my search of the document using Firefox turned up numerous hits on the word “Parachute” and numerous more on the word “Caddis” but none where both words were together “Parachute Caddis” It seems that the match all words selection only ensures that both of the words appear in the document. Placing the phrase in quotes in the search box does not help.
