Forney's P.O.P. Emerger SBS

P.O.P. - Pheasant, Ostrich, Peacock; legs are partridge, but for some reason that “P” is left off. Ostrich makes a neat Hackle-Stacker wing case.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #14
thread - Gudebrod 10/0 black
shuck/tail - pheasant tail/Congo Hair white
rib - x-small wire copper
abdomen - pheasant tail
legs - partridge
wing case - ostrich herl (Hackle-Stacker style)
thorax - peacock herl

Part 1

mash barb, start thread; tie in rib and wrap back to bend

tie in shuck, trim (gap width); tie in pt

wrap abdomen to hook point; tie off/trim

counterwrap rib; helicopter end

tie in a loop of thread (grey Monocord used here); if you have a parachute/gallows tool, use that to hold the thread perpendicular to the hook; I just looped the bobbin over my tying light (worked great)

strip fibers off the end of an ostrich herl; tie it in leaving bare quill equal to thorax length

Part 2

wrap bare quill up the thread

wrap herl back down; tie off/trim

prep partridge; tie in/pull legs to proper length

tie in some peacock; twist around thread and wrap thorax, tie off/trim

pull wingcase over the top; tie off/trim

half hitch x 2, SHHAN

Scott

Bead Belly Hare’s Ear Emerger

similar idea to the P.O.P. with a few different materials and some added weight (yes, the barb did get mashed afterwards)

hook - Dai Riki 135 #12
thread - MFC 8/0 brown
shuck/tail - Congo Hair tan
rib - Krystal Flash UV pearl
abdomen - hare’s ear dubbing
legs - hen back
wing case - ostrich herl (Hackle-Stacker style)
bead - 1/8 brass gold
thorax - dark hare’s ear

regards,
Scott

Scott, I like both of those flies, perhaps the POP a little more. I suspect they would be very good for bluegills and others of that ilk. (Are you paying attention, Q.K.?) I might be tempted to call the second fly a Mohawk HEN, or a MHEN.

When we get Miss Betty back on her feet, and her streamside broom, “Her Boys” are going to have to take her out to chase a few 'gills.

Thanks for posting those two flies,
Ed
