Got out fishing today with my friend, Andy, and the three amigo’s
Fischer, Thor, and Bruno…
I have no idea what type he is but he is (was) a nice size.
Somebody’s oopsssss
that last step is a doosy
Andy’s first winter fly fishing fish, he also caught his second a nice CutBow. Of course the inspectors had to check it out.Fischer was out collecting Firewood again
My two fish of the day
No flowers to take pictures of so this will have to do!
Note: that is the way I like to handle fish in the winter, Don’t take them out of the water any more then to get the hook out, not on rocks, logs, ice shelves etc… I don’t think I have seen bad fishing handling on this BB.
I will be posting this on other BBs that I have seen this happen, not a good way to treat the resource…
thought you might like that… threw the PSC for a while but they wanted something a bit bigger, greedy bow… caught a nice Bull trout just up stream from there last time…
Great to see you are getting out and even better catching fish even in the ice.
All the best.
Mike.
Hay Guys…
This was not through the ice as in “ICE FISHING” this is wide open water in January… 30- 40ft casts with heavy flies, Slumpbusters, baitfish,
whooly buggers… etc, did see 3 raisers at 0800AM but not enough to switch to emerges or gnats.
Love your C&R technique. I prefur they shake themselves off the hook right at my feet and zip away.
The pics some post on here, fingers through the gill plate, blood running down the fish’s sides, or clubbed over the head in the bottom of a boat realy turn me off.
“Through the ice” was a poor choice of words on my part. Do you find streamers are the most productive patterns for the winter fish? I would think most insect activity would be nil, apart from midges. Any luck with things like Butchers, or Alexandrias?
Ok I thought that after I posted… maybe through the ice was not the intention of the words…
Midges, chronies, caddise, and stoneflys, and some small mayflies, think Copperjohns…
But and there is always a but, it depends on the area and type of river, the area where we were fishing has more bigger fish, and lots of Goose ****, and Didimo so I figured that insect activity would be next to nil… so went with Slump busters, and whooly buggers, Zonkers and some secret ones…
The other open river in the area , you do better on the Midges, chronies, caddise, and stoneflys, and some small mayflies, think Copperjohns… and BAW…Big *** Worm, = SJW…
I agree but and there is always a but - here is not as bad as some BB, most here are the very best of Fly Fishing kind… some of my own friends I have a hard time Fly fishing for because of their fish handling technique.
I just do what I can and hope others follow.
When we help Soldiers with PHWC Project Healing Waters Canada, we stress good fishing and fish handling technique, if a troop to keep a fish then off to a stocked pond it is, for a healing experience then off the Rockies or other wilderness area…
great cold day, all day I could hear a wonderful tinkling sound, thought I was loosing my mind (Not a lot to lose I know) at the end of the day while walking the back road to the veh, the sound returned from behind me and then Thor my Golden Retriever ran by me, the SOUND was the frozen hair on his belly, his long hair, was jingling and tinkling together… making what I now judge to be beautiful music…
some pictures of the day.
No fish were lifted airborne for my own vanity picture taking, the memories will last as long or longer…
Nice photos, cold hands indeed! A nice cup of irish coffee, or hot chocolate even, would go down well after an outing. I always think of the hot chocolate that comes out of those machines that ski hills used to have in the 70s and 80s when I see pictures of winter outdoor activities. And Irish Coffee is always good!
Nice looking fish It looks like you had a good day despite the cold. Man if it is one thing I hate (almost as much as wind) is when my fly line/guides get all iced up.
Got out again, with a very good friend who had been sick for 6 month… he and the Doctors still do not know what happened but a guy with no fat on his body lost 20 lbs and that is a scary thing. He seems to be getting better and that is great, looking forward to some high mountain lake fish with him this summer.
he has the pics of the five nice Bows and one cuttbow and two RMW that I got to hand, he did not catch any thing but, his casting skill is still top notch
My fur kids wondering why we are standing in the cold water …
This is Brent with his first LDR and Thor coaching…
Thor may just know when either of us has a fish on but he does not always know where the fish is in the water…Brent also let this one go by way of the LDR
This same hole produces well when the sun goes and the moon shows up…
this is neither one of us but how bad does your casting have to be for this to happen?
