foam back fly

Learned this pattern at my FF club meeting Tuesday night. Pretty simple tye. I don’t know what it’s really called and I know it isn’t new. It was just new to me and I wanted to tye something and try out my new camera and photo program. Going to try the fly out in the morning at the pond. Jim

Hook: 14 or 16. I used a 14.
Thread: Black or brown
Tail: 6 to 10 elk hairs cleaned and stacked
Foam: 1/16" about 3/4" long. Your choice of colors.
Body: 3 peacock herls, 2 strands Flashabou twisted on tying thread
Wing: 1" Brown Nylon yarn by Needloft (Walmart). I separated and frayed the cords
Hackle: Dry fly rooster neck. Badger color.
After I took the picture I trimmed the hackle around the bottom a little shorter than the hook gap.

looks almost like a humpy of some sort, nice tie!

Well, it didn’t float that great. I think the nylon cord I used for the wings should be polypropolene. I remember reading on here about nylon not being good for that. Ya live and ya learn. Jim

That’s how I tie my humpies…Foam instead of deerhair backs
