Well, like my signature says: if it swims and eats, it will eat a fly. Turns out that if it hops it will eat a fly, too.
I was out at the pond the other day, and nothing much was going on fish wise, so why not? I saw this guy sitting out on the duckweed and thought if nothing else I could use him as a practice target. I was putting them pretty close, and after about a half dozen casts he must have thought “well, why not, indeed” and grabbed my fly. Quite a tussle ensued on my little four weight Scott. The hook was barbless, and hooked firmly in the jaw rather than the tongue so the frog was landed and released with no damage to soft tissues (barbs can tear their sensitive tongues, leaving it hard for them to feed). Seemed like fun so I repeated the trick with a few others, finding that the most ferocious attacks on my fly came when I switched to a small popper (also barbless) colored like another, smaller frog. The little cannibals!
Bluegill222,
Without the photo your story would be a lotta Bull(frog).
Profile; Bullfrog222, born…?, Lives…? Occupation…FlyfishingFrogGuide, Foremost authority on hooking wily frogs. Soon to have his own Forum on FAOL BB.
I have never tried it before with a fly rod but I had a couple friends fishing around me with…spin cast and stuff  and they would stick a big lure out and the frog would jump and attack it causing himself to be hooked. Funny stuff.
You should’ve kept him/her and submitted it to the I.G.F.A. (International Game & Frog Association ). Could’ve been a state/US/world tippet/line wt record.
When my cousins and I were young (like 50 years ago) we would take a long stick then tie a piece of mono & a hook with a sliver of red cloth to the hook. We would dangle the hook in front of the frogs and catch them - then clean them - then eat them. Yum Yum.
I used to eat more than a few of them when I was younger, too. With us it was a piece of red vinyl seat cover material from dad’s old truck. Thing is, with all the agricultural and residential chemical run-off around here, ponds with frogs that size are getting a wee bit on the rare side, so I don’t keep them anymore. Twenty years ago, that pond would have had so many bullfrogs on it you couldn’t take a step along the bank without spooking several. The day I got this one, I only saw about a dozen big mature frogs around the whole pond. I remember evenings in my youth when the croaking would get so loud you could feel it instead of just hearing it.
Dshock–
Nothing beats a great set of (frog)legs! Do you think there’d be a market for guided frog-on-the-fly trips?
Bluegill222,
It’s a Win-Win situation! We need to flyfish for frogs! Frogs have been getting off easy for years! I mean just look at the frog’s face!, SMUG is the look on their face. Those frogs know the ‘FISH’ are going to take a beating while they just sit there on a lily pad!
Frogs do have ONE quality and that is ‘Girls’ don’t like them, so they can’t be all bad!
One thing that makes me nervous about frogs is that they (frogs) might be smarter than us. Frogs are pretty ‘cool’, relaxed, expending energy rarely (tongue flashing at bugs), their masters at conserving energy.
Then look at US!, were running around chasing ‘FISH’ and the ‘FISH’ are evading us and were getting stressed!
So we should get the Frogs in the ball-game!
Doug
Smug is right. When I finally got this one in and went to pick him up, he went all limp as if to say “alright, you got me, now just get me back in the water before anyone I know sees me like this!”. The fly almost looks like a cigar butt sticking out the corner of some Tamany Hall-era political boss’s jaw. I hadn’t noticed that 'til you mentioned the smug part.
Betty–
Actually, Sophie (my frog chasing Boston Terrier fishing partner for those of you who don’t know her) tends to make it a little hard to get within casting range when the froggies are around
Ed,
PLEASE! Don’t abandon me! You (guys) are the only friends I have left.
Betty is the on female that could put the ‘Hurt’ on me and I’m not worried…since I’m like a SON to her!
