Fly tying series #3

I added fly number 3 to the blog today. If any of you folks are interested, the link is in my signature line. I’m going to do my best to post a new fly to the blog every week through the winter as I restock my fly box from the ones I lost to trees, rocks, giving them away on the stream / lake, and a rare fly or two lost to a big fish.

Here’s a sneak view of this week’s fly. This is not an original design. I saw it on on an internet site (may have even been on this site somewhere, can’t remember). It works though.

Jeff

Hey Jeff nice variation of this fly, like it

Mike

Mike,
Thanks.

The irridecent neck feathers from a pheasant works well too. Also starling feathers add a nice touch.

The next fly in the series will be a soft hackle I tie with starlig feathers.

Jeff

Starling makes some nice soft hackle flies. Picked up a skin a few weeks ago to try my hand at some soft hackle patterns … not my strong point

Mike

I found with soft hackles, less is more. I love to tie them and fish with them. I’ll have a starling and peacock soft hackle next week.

Jeff

How long have you been tying for?

Any chance for recipes with the flies? If it’s too much bother, I won’t whine. Pics are great.

I’ve been tying a little over 2 years. I took a 6 Saturday beginners class from a local fly club, and then about 7 or 8 months later, had tied several hundred flies and decided to take an advanced class at a fly shop. I have no idea how many flies I’ve tied, into the thousands I’m sure.

I enjoy taking a standard fly from the books and changing it around with different materials, different tying styles, etc and then see if they will catch fish. Some do, some don’t. The ones I’ll be posting on the blog are all fish catchers. If I put an “experimental” fly on the blog, I’ll let everyone know it’s an experiment.
