For those of you who live in the Kansas City area and would be interested, I went to the new bass pro shops in Independence last night and talked to one of the employees in the fly shop to see about getting a group of us together to tie flies once a week. I’ve been to the store in Olathe a few times to tie flies with some FOALers, and had a great time. So, if anyone would be interested, I’m thinking about maybe doing it on Tuesday nights from 7-9.
I’ll be calling the head honcho there to see what the possibilities would be, and will keep everyone posted as I know more.
Please let me know if that’s something that some of you would like to do.
Thanks Hugo. I haven’t been able to visit the folks at the Olathe store since that first time we went, though I sure would like to. It would be GREAT if you managed to get one going at the new Independence store too. I wouldn’t be able to commit to it every week but I am hopeful that I could make it more often. It sure is a lot closer than the other store.
Of course, I should have been calling you more to get together this winter. I haven’t been very good about advance planning lately.
I wonder, do we need to wait a few weeks to let the crowds die down a bit. I’m not sure how much room they have to give us right now. Maybe once they get done with all their initial promotional stuff in the middle of March. I was there last Friday at noon, and it was PACKED . The parking lot was FULL with lots of cars driving around looking for a parking place that didn’t exist.
Very cool idea Rick. I’ve read all your articles, and they’ve really been helpful, inspiring, and encouraging. I learned to fly fish at the School of Rick Z, so it would be neat to get a chance to meet you and tie with you.
If you come down maybe we can convince Joe Hyde to come over and see what this tying business is all about.
I hadn’t thought about doing it on Saturdays, but I’ll see if they would be open for something like that.
I tell you what, why doesn’t everyone post which day of the week would work best for them, or if any day of the week would work that’ll be fine too. I don’t really have a preference, other than if this is going to be a weekly event, I’ll be missing quite a few because I like to go fishing on the weekends as often as possible.
I do know that they are open to groups meeting on weekends during special store events. A few weeks ago there was an expo at the Olathe store, and some of the regular FAOL tiers spent a good bit of the day there on Sat., and Sun., so maybe that can be an option.
I won’t be able to make it every week no matter what day it is. I think a week night is probably better for the regular meetings. Saturday’s especially would be hard for a regular meeting. I think moving it to a Saturday every once in a while so that others from farther away can make it is a good idea. Holding our kickoff tying session on a Saturday, I think would work.
I’ll have to check my schedule for the upcoming Saturday’s.
Looking at my calendar for the next two months. I am not available on March 29 nor on April 12. March 15th is a little iffy. My daughter has a piano recital on that day, but we don’t know yet what time she plays. If we get lucky and she gets to go first, we will have the rest of the day free. If she doesn’t play until the middle of the day it’ll shoot most of the day.
March 25th I’ll be piping in the LS St. Patrick’s Day parade, so I don’t think I’ll be able to do much then, but who knows, maybe something later in the afternoon/ evening will work.
I’d like to get it going sometime soon, maybe we can do a fly tying expo on a Sat/Sun and get everyone from out of town up here to hang out and tell mostly true stories.
