Yesterday I caught my biggest spotted bass ever (19in). It chomped down on a longear that had taken my Clouser and got hooked himself - usually they get off when that happens. Seems like I remember seeing a recipe for a fly that captures the profile and color of a small sunfish but I don’t remember where. I’d like to give one a try - can anybody help?
You could tie a Puglisi EP minnow in bluegill colors. A bit of a chore to tie at first, but they do work and make a nice sunfish profile:

Here are three that I have found on FAOL, I know there are others in various subheadings… the word perch has to do with the body shape of the fish, even the word bass, is another way of saying perch shape.
Deer Hair Perch
Hillfisher Perch
Yellow Perch
I’ve been tying a new variation of the Fatal Attraction as a Baby Pumpkinseed based on the pattern at Fly Fish Ohio. The pattern and video are available at http://www.flyfishohio.com/fatal_attraction_baby_pumpkinseed.htm. This is a picture of one that I tied based on their pattern.
Season Two Episode 224 Waking Minnow tied by Dave Whitlock also Season Two Episode 214 Most Whit Hair Bug.

Hope it helps

Here is my N.E.W. Bluegill. The materials are available from http://www.1a-fly-fishing.com/index.html, as well as free videos on how to use them.
Here is another one I tie a lot of. I has been a very good bass, smallmouth, and even striper fly for me. It is called the Fire Tiger Bucktail. I think the original used doll eyes, but I prefer the classic streamer look of junglecock eyes. I don’t remember where I saw this pattern first, so I can’t tell you who came up with it, but it’s a good pattern…sort of like a Mickey Finn on steroids…
Fire Tiger Bucktail
Hook: Cabelas Model 40, or equivalent 3X Streamer Hook sz. 4, 6.
Thread: Danville 3.0, yellow
Body: Silver or Holo tinsel
Thorax: Red Uniwire, small
Wing: sparse bucktail, orange on bottom, yellow in the middle, and green on top.
Eyes: Imitation Junglecock
Accents: 3 vertical bars drawn on with black Prismacolor marker.
You could always tie an Angel Hair, or Polaris Minnow, or Puglisi fly in bluegill colors, as well. They would probably all work, to a more or lesser degree.
Semper Fi.
Fire Tiger Bucktail…i like that one!
I think Wingsdk, probably ties his closer to the true pattern than I do. You can see pictures of his Fire Tigers under the recent topic “Deer Hair-Two Flies”. His ties are much neater than mine.
I didn’t want to post his picture here without his permission, but the topic was just in the last few days, so it should be easy to find.
Thanks everyone for the ideas!

I came up with this after watching the Fly fishing Ohio instruction on the Puglisi baitfish. The body is from synethtic fibers from a prescription bottle with a marabou tail with a couple of strands of sparkle flash in it.
Here is a jig I have been tying a few years that was meant to be like a Sun Fish, Bream, whatever and has been popular. I would have probably changed it some if I had it to do again, but at least the colors are good one for this. Maybe add in a tiny bit of other back color. Don’t see why you can’t make this into a fly.
Hope I don’t get in trouble for advertising, LOL! If I had this picture on Photobucket I would just link that, but it’s not on there.
