fly rod upgrade

I am new to flyfishing (less than a Year). I bought a fly rod-reel combo at dicks for $50. I seriously need to upgrade. A co-worker, whom I trust wants to sell a Middle of the road Orvis rod 5wt with a Battencourt reel. I think he wants me to make an offer, but I wouldn’t even know a ballpark offer. I am sure that it is a good set-up, but I need a starting point. Any advise out there?

Welcome to the site Brian. Hope you come back often and make it one of your home’s away from home

It is very hard to make an estimate on something unseen and not even knowing which Orvis rod. A new Battenkill reel lists for $80 and a mid range rod would sell for about $250 (?)

If the toal is $330 then I would say offer about 1/2 or $150. Please try it first to see if you like how it casts, that is more important than anything else.

Welcome aboard swabby…

Shoot me an eMail at jsentell@snip.net
with the following:

and, the size of the Battenkill reel, i.e., 3/4, 5/6, etc.

I have most of Orvis’ inventory downstairs and what I don’t presently have, I have had…

Welcome Brian, you will get top notch advise here from folks who have the best of intentions. If your co-worker throws in flyline and backing with the outfit, that could be another $30 -$60 on top of everything else. Depending on the type of fishing you do, it may meet your needs and be set up for the rod. Good luck, Jonezee

Brian,

My guess is that there’s some potential for getting a good deal on a nice outfit. However, we definitely need to know the specific model numbers of your friend’s rod and reel in order to give you an idea of a reasonable price. I’d also want to know the condition. Have you seen it?

If the five weight is 7’ 9" in length and has a flex rating of 5.5 it is perhaps the greatest rod ever conceived in the mind of man.

You’ll learn to love it.

Buzz,

Do you really think it could be a Far’n’Fine described as a “middle of the road Orvis?”

Jim

While working at Orvis, we became an Outlet and we did get some Far and Fines in. They were marked with an R on the cork (refurbished) and they had a clearwater reel seat on them. Same blank , but sold for $175. (and no warranty)

Jim…the FnF blank was used in the Silver Label and early Clearwater series.

Believe this is my first post. My first rod(decent rod) was a 7’9" 5 weight, I believe it was called a Orvis clearwater. This was probably 10 or 15 years ago. Came as an outfit and was around $130. Someone suggested that I use a DT 4 floating line on it-it fished like a dream. Wonderful small stream rod. I gave it to a friend; lesson-never give a rod to someone who you hope will take up fly fishing. The rods been sitting in his office for a couple of years.

A good rod and reel, extra spool, lines, leaders, tippet, vest, waders, two boxs full of flys, books, floatant hemostats, nippers…everything!!
Last week I got a “Maybe this year”
