Fly of the week - I like em!!

I really like the fly of the week, the Eastern Green Drake, and would like to tie some up. Problem…I don’t have olive Grizzly hen back. I have all the rest of the stuff or a substitute but nothing I can use as a sub for the wing. Can someone point me to a source or a sub, or another name for these feathers? I tried to search for them but Google did not turn up anything that I thought looked like the feathers in the picture came off of.

Thanks, Dwight

Indian hen back a possible substitute?

take a look. Another possible sub is American Speckled Hen Back, but you won’t get as nice of barring cause it’s speckled.

hope this helps a bit, nen-bran

Also this one may be a good substitute…

The fish aren’t going to be staring at the wings on the fly, so you could sub most anything. Its more for what you see than what the fish will see.

Chris is right.

Use any feather you like in the color you want. Fish won’t care a bit.

I’ve already tied some, but I didn’t want green, so I went with browns and greys, used a brownish partridge feather for the wing.

Gonna catch lots of trout with it, and it may be good enough for bluegills too (I doubt it, they can be picky…) ;).

Buddy

I like to use dyed green woodduck for wings on my green drakes.
