my 4wt has the sa mastery, and my 5wt has the airflo ridgline, love em both
I’ve got several lines from various manufacturers so here is my .02. On my TFO Professional 5wt. I’ve got a SA Mastery GPX WF5Fand really like it. It produces a nice tight loop without a great deal of effort. I used the Mastery Trout on this rod for a while and it just didn’t cast the way I thought it should, so I replaced it with the Mastery GPX. On my Cabela’s LST 6wt. I use an Orvis Silver Label WF6F. I also really like this line and it was a great deal as I got it at one of Orvis’ online Tent Sales and paid only about $14 for it. I also have several Cabela’s Prestige Plus lines that I’ve picked up in the bargan cave that I’m saving for when needed.

Seriously, and I can stress this enough…SERIOUSLY stay away from the 555. Diane is completely right, their older lines are crap. I just took off my 555 wf-3 this weekend. I’m thinking of sending it back to cortland, or pitching it. Normally I would keep it. The old lines become the practice lines and all that. This stuff was so bad it wasn’t even worth keeping. They have been working out line memory problems with the 555. I first noticed it over the winter, and now its just as bad with the warm weather (which usually loosens line up). The memory is so bad I couldn’t shoot more than 10 feet with a tangle. I do all the classic tricks. Set it on a heater. Stretch it out. Once it goes back on the reel for more than 5 seconds, its back to the bird nest. This is the second 555 that I have bought. The first was their rocket taper and it worked out just fine. I bought it about 3 years ago. You can tell that my newer line must be an older one. I did purchase it in the fall, but it was on sale and likely an older model. I’m a SA Mastery person now. After all the good reviews (and the comparable price), I’m just not willing to give cortland another chance.
On a side note: Anyone try Lefty’s new line?
I heartily endorse the 444 peach as well. Although there is nothing wrong with the SA Mastery either.
As for the 555, I bought one of the older version when it first came out. I loved the line for the first season but as mentioned above starting with season 2 memory set in and the line was better suited to use as a slinky than casting flies. I have heard that the new version performs very well, but I have been gun shy in regards to buying a new one. Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the old and new?
Rickie,
Do you recommend the Trout or XPS?
Northern Sport makes much of the private lable fly lines you see.
This season I bought four of their factory second lines from a shop in Denver and I’m very pleased
I saw no reason for them being labled seconds and they preform as well as many of my more expensine lines
Supple, and high floating, the only disadvantage I found was I thought the 6DT was a bit thick
The price on these lines recently went up to $9.50 each … free shipping
If they’re only a fraction as good as a Mastery line you’re still getting your money’s worth
Lot of opinions here. Nobody wants to knock a sponsor…but…and they may not have to. but, what do people think about the Global Dorber Aquanova lines? Something like $12-$15 each.
Would really like to hear opinions on these lines.

Northern Sport, the brand that I mentioned in the post above yours, makes the Aquanova lines that Global Dorber sells under their own private lable
As I said above, they work for me
Dudley,
Sure glad to see your msg above…as I had already ordered a whold bunch of them from Global Dorber. Appreciate the opinion that they are ok lines and I didn’t make a big mistake.
Thanks from me.
I have peach 444 on my 5wt works good.
I have 555 dynatip on my 8wt and had no issues whatsoever with it (second season). No memory, no splitting. I cannot however practice in my yard. Three cats are lined up in the yard every time they see the rod in my hands… ![]()
