Any thoughts or opinions on the relative merits of subscription to the above-mentioned tome? I know they are a sponsor of FAOL and that in it self speaks volumes. But, as a relative newbie to tying (just a little over one years worth) is there some value in receiving this magazine?
I seem to remember in some past post a mention of a special deal for a 5-year subscription (i.e. sign up for 5 years and get a copy of “The Fly Tiers Benchside Reference”). Does anyone know if that option is still available? When I check the WEB site they only showed a 1 and 2-year option.
Your thoughts and insights would be greatly appreciated.

They are heavier on the tying content than most mags. I usually skip where-to/how-to articles, though they have them too. I subscribed last fall, and am likeing their mag. I bookmark good tying articles and patterns with post-it notes on my shelf, and FF&TJ has more than its fair share at my house.
That said, I’m going to subscribe to Fly Tyer here soon also. But FF&TJ has enough good new tying content to keep my attention, for sure. I’ll be keeping it coming here, and it gets lots of little post-it notes on good patterns to tie and how to fish them.

Isn’t that Mr Williams you refer to the environmental writer in Fly Rod and Reel magazine? I bleev Fly Fishing and Tying Journal is innocent of his “crimes”.
Picking Ted Turner as their Angler of the Year a couple years ago really turned me off FR&R. But when they ran Craig Mathews as Angler of the Year, I was no longer angry. Great Guy and worthy of the honor. But I still havne’t re-subscribed.
Dave Hughes is editor of FF&TJ. anything with which he’s associated is good!
I have subscribed to it for years. I haven’t seen anything else I like as well. It’s somewhat oriented to the west coast and the west in general although it’s not exclusively so. Since I live in California, this suits me just fine. There are other magazines with this orientation, but I find them just a little too … slick I guess is the word. Fishing and Tying seems more down-to-earth and related to fishing as I do it. ISTR that when I first subscribed, they offered me a 5 year deal because at the time I was president my FF club. The most recent renewal, about a year ago was for 4 years.

Great mag for new fly ideas. Seems like they are all getting weighed down with advertisements now, but, this is one mag I keep getting. Only four a year however.
I used to subscribe to several fishing magazines, but FFTJ is the only one that I still suscribe to. It seemed with the others that the content is repetitive, or that they just plain lack any useful content (the latter comment is particularly directed at Fly Rod & Reel, with articles like what fly fishing retirement town you can live in - come on - I can’t believe that magazine sells).
I’m with Danbob and 'Goddess. It is my favorite of the FF mags out there. I have gotten an number of good ideas and patterns. I like their tying articles, and yes I do agree that it leans to the WC, but my experience WW fishing in PA is that the patterns seem to work equally well. Just my 2c.

PS Wish is was 6 or 8 issues a year!
While not a subscriber, it is the one FF mag that i buy on a regular basis. Good articles, good writers (Dave W, Jim S, Skip M, Dave H, and so on) on subjets that matter.
recently I laid out and organized the 5 years worth of FF&TJ mags (packing to move), and looked at each and every articel in an effort to find repeats, near repeats, and rehased articles. After all that skimming, I could not find anything other than two articles on salmon flies that were close enough to call a rehased, and even then it was just that the two flies they had instruction photos on were incredibly similar. But then again, these articles were like 3 years apart.
I think you will like the mag.
Have fun, Jeff
Tis my time on the water, in the mountains, and in my driftboat where I can see things as they really are.
Great magazine , heavy on the tying.
I got the 5 yr with the Benchside Reference.
Good deal.
I think you have to ask for the TV special offer to get the book.
Amato website should give you the info, if not, e-mail them, they were very helpful with me.
