Fly Fishing Coastal South Carolina?

I’ll be spending the first week of August 2006 at my mother’s in Pawleys Island, SC. I’d like to do some salt water ff’ing while I’m there. Can anyone point me towards a fly fishing guide in the Myrtle Beach to Georgetown area? Most I’ve googled seem to specialize mainly in spin/bait. I’ve only found one who seems to offer ff’ing in the Pawleys Island area, and would like to find a few to call and interview. Thanks!!

Capt Doug Sinclair is a saltwater fly-fishing guide, casting instructor, writer and photographer from Alliance (Oriental), North Carolina. You can find him on the web at [url=http://www.flyfishcarolina.com:aec1e]www.flyfishcarolina.com[/url:aec1e] or call him at 252.617.5580.

LF, I appreciate the referral, but Oriental is 215 miles from where I’ll be staying.

I am looking for the same thing. Here is some info that I found:

It is from the South Carolina state chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association. They list a handful of guides that work the SC coast.

Another option might be to call the Bass Pro Shop’s store in Myrtle Beach. They might have some more leads for you.

We plan to go down in late June to Myrtle Beach so I’m hoping for a day out with a guide myself.

Hope this helps.

John, thanks, I’ve bookmarked that site. FWIW, I’ve found a couple in the Little River area, but I’m not sure how fly fishing oriented they are. I have found several fly fishing guides in the Charleston area. If I find anything else I’ll post it here.

Doug has written a lot for FAOL - I thought he would be a great contact for you. Guides do tend to know other guides, as well as who might be good or not.

That’s great LF, I didn’t know that. I’ll contact him. Hopefully he can point me in the right direction.

John, here is the text of a post I received on the VFS board:

“Check out Capt Gene Dickson out of Georgetown or make the run down to Charleston and hook up with the best flyfishing guide in the state Capt Richard Stuhr. There are so many fish in SC and so many ways to fish for them you will be happy.”

I met Capt. Richard Stuhr a few years ago. He did a program for our TU chapter in Asheville and also donated a trip for our banquet. I had a friend and his son go out with him that summer and they had a blast.
