Fly Dryer

I made a Fly Dryer this weekend. Who knows if I’ll ever use it, but I recently had a microwave cease to function correctly, so I salvaged the motor and another useful piece which serves as the base, and had most of the makings for one, so I figured I might as well BUILD it!

I bought the electric cord (probably could have cut one off something no longer being used, but it was less than $2, so no big deal). I also bought a drywall sanding wheel that has foam backing. It was around $5. So, all told, the unit cost me $7.

Dave,

Nice job! I suspect that you will find the time to tie up some epoxy flies just to see how your new toy works.

Thanks for sharing the ideas.

Nice build. I made one last year (or was it the year before :lol:) using a BBQ rotisserie motor and a block of balsa wood. They work great. I think you’ll find yourself using it a lot.

Very clever.

Does it Bing when the flies are done?

No…but maybe that feature can be added to Version 2.0?

For $7 and 20 minutes to assemble the whole thing, it doesn’t owe me much! ;o)

Very nice…ingenuity at it’s finest! Cheap is always good.

Dave,

How did you control the on/off? Just by a plug? I really would like to build one of these but I am not sure how to rig up the electrical part of it.

Thanks!

You can purchase an in line switch and add it.

I though about putting some sort of switch in the electrical line, but I didn’t. Its just a plug-in, but I also made one of the connections to the plug with an easy disconnect connection (I don’t know the technical name for it).

You might find that the barbs on the hooks tear out the foam a bit when you’re using it. If you find this happening, you might consider getting a spring from an old screen door and wraping it aound the diameter of the foam disc. You can then simply slip your flies into the slots in the spring rather than actually hooking them into the foam. Just a thought…

FishnDave, Nice very nice. Recycling is great, especially if you can get something for fly tying or fishing out ot the deal. Take care, John.

Ok, so I am trying to build on of these tonight! I might come back to ask you a few more questions about how you rigged it together but the pictures are very helpful!
