I have been using Indian Peacock wing coverts as a substitute for Florican Bustard, does anyone use something else for a substitute, they would like to recommend? There is a substitute shown in the Winter 2006 Fly Tyer Mag. but it doesn’t look as good to me, as what I am already using.
Try contacting John McClain at feathersmc.com. He had some nice turkey subs for florican at one point, and may still be doing them. They have great strand length and marry quite well. By the way, I checked out your site, very nice flies.

Thanks Guys, I am very familiar with John and I looked over some of the substitutes he had at the Somerset show. Was just wondering if anybody has come across something else.
Give Bryant Freeman a try, he owns Eskape Anglers in Riverview, NB and “makes” all of the subs in his shop. He has been supplying other shops and retail customers for years with his products.
I could buy the real stuff, if you would only come up with the money you owe me. It’s been a almost a year now! And Hey! Don’t you owe me an Indian Crow skin?
I haven’t tried any but there are alot of exotic hen phesants (like amhearst, golden and tragophan) that have tail feathers that look alot like Flourican. You might give them a try if you stumble across any. For some reason, hen Amhearsts and Goldens are much harder to find than the males.
I’m not a Salmon Fly Tyer, so I’m not really sure if it’s a good article or not, but in the current issue of “Fly Tyer” there’s an article on tying Salmon Flys using various substitutes for endangered or expensive materials. Perhaps it may give you some ideas.
