Can anyone tell me where I can find a good pressure gage for my float tube? I found one for $50 which I is a little steep price to pay for as often as I go tubing here in Ohio and I found one for $9.00 that looks like the one I use on my truck which isn’t sensitive enough for the recommended 1-2 psi inflation pressure.
Dear mskoz,
You can get a low pressure pencil type gauge for a couple of bucks at any auto parts store. It will look just like a standard pencil type gauge except the scale only goes to 8 or 10 pounds. I can’t gaurantee the accuracy, but I can say that I never damaged a float tube with the one that I used.
If you really want precision accuracy the only choice is one of those $ 50.00 jobbies. The Boston valves on my current tube won’t accept a pressure gauge without some sort of adapter, so I just use the old whitewater raft pressure gauge, otherwise known as my thumb, on it. If I can lightly push down on the inflated tube with my thumb and make a dent it’s about right.

Gauge? You’re supposed to use a gauge??
I’ve always just ‘thumbed it’.
Is it really that critical?
Good Luck!

These guys sell a nice one for $13:
Click on AIR PUMPS and then AIR ACCESSORIES.
I have one and it works great and can be adapted to work in conjunction with your pump or via a T fitting on the hose. My Bravo pump has the same valve built right on it. Unfortunately they don’t sell that pump any more but the canister pump they do sell has a port on top where you can easily attach this valve.
Forget about trying to use one like you do on a tire valve . IF the valve isn’t one way like a car tire; every time you try and measure pressure you will lose a pound or three of air.
BTW check out the nice pumps they sell.
Thanks for the help. If I can’t find one in the stores around here I guess I’ll just stick to thumbing it. I have a little time before I’ll need it again.
Motorcycle shops carry low pressure guages for All terrain vehicle tires.
If they sell quads they will have the guages.
The guage for my trials bikes went from 1/2 pound to 3 pounds. Cost $5.00
check out the local sporting goods store that sells balls. i got one for my volleyball that measre from 0 - 10 lbs. really cheap too.
