After a conversation in the chatroom last night I thought I’d post a few flies tied with peccary. My photography is adequate at best. Hope this works.

Peccary has become my favorite tying material of all time!!! Thank you!!!
Allan,
Guard hairs, right? Like Rob McClean’s Quill Body material (I think he uses porcupine). Nice flies.

Scott
Very nice Allan. Looking forward to tying some sulphurs.
Hi All,
The bodies I assume. I have a bit of peccary, do you have to water soak the hair before you wrap it.
Thanks and regards,
Gandolf
I was watching Betty play with some of this at our fly tying group tonight. Awesome looking stuff. I managed to bum a few hairs and will be sitting down to play with it in the very near future. Just out of curiosity, anyone know a good source for it? Colors available?
About 30 years ago I was in DFW, TX for some training and took a side trip south from San Antonio to do a little hunting. I shot a huge javelina and skinned it out life-size and had it tanned. It is still hanging in the garage right now. I have looked at it many times thinking flies, but never touched scissors to it. Guess I ought to take another look.
Gandolf,
The hairs may or may not need to be soaked. It depends on how it was preserved and handled. From the pieces I’ve seen, tanning usually dries out the hide and the hairs. It also depends on how the hairs are used. Obviously, if the hairs are stiff as a board or they crack when you wind them around the shank, then you’ll need to soak them. Okay, that’s not much of an answer but it’s the best I can give you without seeing the specific hair. Also, there are fine hairs that are used for antennae, tails and feelers.

I am going to be playing around with this material. If you have patterns with it, please post them.
Not my fly, but an interesting picture. I have not tied with this material, so I take this to be the natural.
The above is a Hans van Klinken fly (Klinkhamer fame). Photo by Hans Weilenmann.
Neat looking body, but I have to try that wing case/wing right now!
I am working on the Javalina now. I love that stuff. I am making quill bodies out of them on scud hooks. This stuff is great. I will post photos later.
Here is one of them. I had a hard time with taking photos of these little flies. Anyway, the fly has mixed dubbing, and a lt dun hen collar. There may be one already just like this one, so I am not going to name it yet. Maybe somebody can tell me. Plus I need better photos. I may take the fly outside, and try to photograph it out there.
