Flies for trout

Hey all,
I have been fishing for brook trout all my life and douring the dog days of summer i find them very hard to catch. Does any one konw some patterns that might increase my sucess rate. Thanks in advance for all the sugestions.

Not sure I would ask this on the ‘Warm Water’ forum, but, then again, at that time of year you might be right. They head for the coldest springs they can find. Make sure you aren’t fishing empty water.

As I recall from fishing in Nfld about 25 years ago (eep!), small Royal Coachman wet flies (size 12 or 14) worked really well.

If you find them harder to catch during the “dog days of summer” it’s probably because you’re fishing in water that’s too warm. The most comprehensive book I’ve seen yet for describing where to find trout on those “dog days” is Joe Humphreys’ Trout Tactics.

Agree 100% with Jeff…Royals even Humpy’s, plus ants.

Check the water temp when you are having great fishing and do the same thing when you can’t catch anything. Brook Trout prefer COLD water.
Look at a Map and go upstream (miles) and try again.
