I saw Jack’s post on the “Usual” (nice tie by the way Jack) and rather than highjack that thread I thought I’d start a new one on recommended ties for the Michigan Fish-In in June. Since I’ll be coming from several hundred miles south of Grayling and have no experience with fishing in this area what would you all suggest as must have flies for this Fish-In?
I’ve checked out the Gates Lodge Hatch Chart but I’d be interested in your thoughts and recommendations on suggested patterns.

Blue Winged Olives size 18 to 22. Tricos in the same size. 14 & 16 Adams. Usual’s 16 - 20. Dust Bunnies 12 & 14 and Mattress Thrashers rigged with a dropper.
Hopefully it’s a bit cooler this year and the water temps are down.
Also try:
Light Cahill nymphs in size 16, Isonychia bicolor in size 14 and maybe 12 (duns and nymphs), Mahogany Duns in sizes 16 and 18, Black Ants and Orange Ants in various sizes down to tiny, wet skunks and dry skunks, parachute patriots down to size 18, Black Caddis in size 18. The capitalized patterns represent actual insects. The others are attractors.

Speaking of the Mich. Fish-In, does anyone know what a non-resident all species lic. will cost this year? There was a rumor last year where they would be rather pricey this year.

You guys are correct. Just went to purchase a license and realized that the new license does not kick in until April 1, NOT March 1. I stand corrected.

Warren, speaking of flies for MIFI, have you ever done a FotW on your magical, mystical Deer Hair Streamer? IIRC, you did well with that fly.

If my memory serves me right, the year you were there, the fly that contained deer hair and was productive for us, was a pattern that Brad tied and it could be fished as a dry or pulled under and fished wet. It only had 2 materials in it. It had flash tied on top with deer hair over that. Maybe we can get Brad to explain it better. The attached picture is one I tied and poorly at that, but, it worked.
Warren, That’s the fly. I think I might try it with an opalescent tinsel body.

Attention all anglers, a new fishing license season begins April 1!
Michigan’s fishing licenses were restructured on March 1 – there are now five options to choose from when making your purchase. All fishing licenses are good for all species.
• Resident Annual - $26
• Non-Resident Annual - $76
• Senior Annual (for residents age 65 or older) - $11
• 24-Hour (resident or non-resident) - $10
• 72-Hour (resident or non-resident) - $30
Residents and non-residents can also purchase the Hunt/Fish combo license for $76 and $266 respectively that consists of a base license, annual fishing license, and two deer tags. Please note, a base license is not required when just purchasing a fishing license.
Michigan’s new fishing licenses will bring additional revenue into the state that will be invested into the state’s fisheries; including providing greater access to world-class fishing opportunities, improving fisheries habitat in inland lakes and streams, and increasing the health and quantity of fish stocked in the state.
Fisheries Division does not receive any general funds and depends on angler dollars (through license sales and federal excise tax dollars for fishing tackle) to manage the state’s fisheries. Buying a fishing license, even if you do not plan to fish, can make a big difference to the future health of Michigan’s prized freshwaters.
