All the talk lately on carp fishing has got me all riled up. However, there are no carp here…just suckers. Anyone know of good flies/techniques to catching these? Thanks for any advice.

“Flip a fly”
I am assuming you are speaking of Idaho in the “no carp here just suckers” river. In ORegon, on the John Day River which abounds in suckers and sqawfish, the lowly “Cowdung” fly did turn the trick for me. Fished wet with full sinking line, slow, hand over hand retrieve, would produce some hefty fish. They seemed to like the tailouts. Give it a try, and good luck, Jonezee
I learn more about the world while talking to myself when fishing alone
If we cannot say bad things about carp, can we at least attack suckers?
I await the first post on how good eating they are.
Yes, I am above fishing for and eating carp, pienoes, squaw fish, & hog suckers.
Pete,
My fisheries proffesor in college said they taste like trout, but have too many bones to bother with. I figured I wouldn’t bother.

First, let me say that trout are pretty low on my list of eating fish. They are just a little too oily for my taste. With all due respect to your professor, suckers have a more delicate, less “fishy” taste than trout. Of course, anybody can do a bad job of cooking just about any kind of fish.

If y’all keep posting about eating sucker and/or carp, I’ll continue to lose my appetite and before ya know it, I’ll be back to my “fightin weight”.

the day i am “above” catching any fish is the day i quit fishing.
Suckers, dig around in the mud and eat auqautic insects, they have a muddy. Taste i dont target them but they can put up a fight.
I have often hooked up with suckers while fishing the tailwater below croton dam for trout. They are either paticularly fond of small fox sqirrel nymphs or they just take them because that’s what I usually use as a search pattern if there is no surface action.
all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim
Marco,
And with a good wine…???
Mountainlaker - I haven’t (yet) targetted suckers specifically on the fly - but some guys have. Seems nymphs do best - misc. patterns.
Too many fish - not enough time …
Hey there Ducksterman,
Perhaps with a nice glass of Ripple or a vintage Mogen David. Mmmmmmmmmmmm
On the other hand, maybe NOT.
The only fish I eat, and rarely, are those served in restaurants. I flyfish/fish mainly/only for trout not because of their flavor but for where they live.Betty Hiner kinda says it best. I do sometimes catch a sucker etc., but it’s by accident and not by intent. Targeting “rough” fish is not below my dignity, it’s just not my cup of tea. That shouldn’t be hard to understand.

Hey Bill,
Thanks but …
Actually I have “fond” memories of a family/ethnic Christmas tradition where ground carp or whitefish plus other binding ingredients were reshaped into a fish shape and served in an aspiclike gelatin.Usually with a sprinkle of white vinegar. Probably a Catholic version of Gefilte fish. That dish probably best defines why I am not a big fish eater.
But, keep the recipes coming
Mark
PS: Mountainlaker, you should forgive the “hijack”.
