Five flys according to Lefty Kreh????

I was at a Lefty Kreh weekend recently…absolutely wonderful. Go to see him if you ever get the chance. While I was there Lefty brought up the idea of five standard universal patterns. He started naming them and then couldn’t remember the last two :?

HE said:

  1. Wooly Bugger
  2. Greenie Weenie
  3. Griffith’s Gnat

Anybody know what the other two are? Just curious…

Barry

One’s gotta be Elk Hair Caddis…

Yeah I would say an Elk hair would be up there.

If I had to guess I would say one would be a Pheasant Tail nymph and the other would be an ant pattern.

Anybody know???

If he was talking trout, some of his writings include the Humpy and Parachute Adams.

For other species, the Lefty’s Bug, Lefty’s Deceiver, and Clouser Minnow are favorites.

I wouldn’t have thought Green Weenie would be on the list (even though I always have a few in the nymph box!) but if I were to guess what else would be essential then I’d want to have an Adams as well.

‘Castwell’s Marblehead’ and Ladyfishers ‘Fishfinder.’

C’mon JC he doesn’t even know what they are

Sure he does. We do know him. Duh. He even reads FAOL.

Parachute Adams

My ‘old stand by’ the bead-head Adams.

May I dare to guess the EHC and the Hare’s Ear?

a BEAD HEAD ADAMS! That’s hilarious! never heard of one, I get it still works though!

I’d add a gold ribbed hare’s ear and a pheasant tail nymph as His last two.

Lefty reads FAOL? Cool! Hi Lefty.

I took a riverside class with Brian Flechsig of Madriver Outfitters here in Columbus and he suggested learning how to fish the following five -

1 - STREAMER - Wooly Bugger
2 - DRY - Adams Dry / Elk Hait Caddis
3 - NYMPH - Hare’s Ear / Phesant Tail
4 - ANNELIAD - San Juan Worm
5 - Egg Pattern

I know I’d be lost without EHC, hares ears, or stimulators most the time

That is seven

I think they are/would be: a parachute adams and a madam X

I would bet the last two would be a parachute adams and a madam x (at least they used to be)

I am surprised that for steelhead he didn’t mention Stratton’s Pink Meannie

Deceiver
Clouser deep minnow
Lefty’s popping bug
Seaducer
Ted Williams’ Whore Fly

no… really. One has to be an ant. Lefty’s big on ants.
