I am new to this site and was hoping to get a little help…
My job is taking me to Flint, MI for the next few weeks. I will be off on weekends, but staying there. I would like to find a stream a two in the area (that I can wade)…to fly fish for smallmouth. I will be staying in Birch Run…just north of Flint. I guess trout would be good too, but I have sort of switched gears to bass fishing until fall.
If there are any websites out there that would give me info, or if anyone on here could help out…I would greatly appreciate it!!
wvflyfish;
Welcome aboard!!
Will you be there over the 4th of July? FAOL is having a Fish - In in Grayling on the Au Sable river that week. Members from all over the country will be gathering at Gate’s Ausable Lodge for a week of fishing, eating and story telling. Grayling is a little over 2 hours from Flint, just off I 75. You can’t visit Michigan without wetting a line in the “Holy Waters” of the Au Sable River.
The Flint River in downtown Flushing appears to be very wadeable. The smallmouth fishing is supposed to be awesome. I don’t fish any rivers in the area, but I grew up in Flint. I know other people that fish the Cass river for warmwater species right in the Birch Run area. I normally fish lakes when fishing the Flint area. There are tons of lakes in the area that offer good fishing. If you have a whole day to fish, it is well worth the gas money to make the trip to the AuSable. There is no place I’d rather be. If you want good info on the Ausable call Gates Ausable Lodge.
Thank you for the info! I will probably go ahead and throw the rod case in the truck…and a fly box or two…and check out the two streams you mentioned. I would just like to find a place close by to hit maybe a few evenings during the week…and maybe a half-day’r on the weekend.
