Fishing magazines

When it comes to buying fishing magazines ,what ones do i depend on for catching fish or buying new equipment. It seems their are to many to choose from, what ones are dependable.

the one I buy the most is Flyfishing & Tying Journal. there a sponsor here, usually a good read.

as far as product testing, I trust the opinions on the bulletin board here, no advertisers to keep happy.

Eric

I buy and read most of the fly fishing magazines. My three favorites are Fly Fishing and Tying Journal, American Angler, and Fly Tyer. I consider many of the others to be a waste of time but even they are better than O or Good House Keeping. 8T

Hummm…I get AA & flytyer. Gotta take a look at Flyfishing and Tying Journal.

I subscribe to two print magazines, Fly Fishing and Tying Journal and Fly Tyer. Both are very readable, excellent fishing and tying tips and techniques in both.

I discontinued my subscription (after many years) when I discovered that many of the patterns in the mag were simply second rate versions of patterns I saw tied better at FFF and fly club conclaves. I figure there must be a “good ole boys” network for the mag because conclaves very frequently have MUCH better flies from an identical or nearly identical patterns to that shown in Fly Tyer.

Often I have heard tyers say that Fly Tyer shows the most difficult or most cumbersome tying techniques which end up with a fairly crude product. Personally, I don’t think much of the foam flies they show.

The Journal and Hatches are both a good read.

i would say none of them would be recommended for buying equipment. the articles are merely guides for equipment and the authors evaluation is simply an opinion as it is on forums and bulletin boards.

if something catches your eye in print, its up to the buyer to head to a local fly shop and try the equipment out. you may not like what the author of an article recommened as the next best thing since sliced bread.

you dont walk into a car dealer blind folded, touch a new car in the showroom and immediately buy it. you gotta kick the tires and take it out for a drive. then you decide.

as you can see by the resposes above, noone recommened a magazine that was worthy to read about buying equipment

Hi Ronnie,

I tend to agree with the general feelings being expressed when it comes to tying and equipment.

Here in CA we have a very good publication, the “California Fly Fisher” that I’d recommend to anyone getting started in our state. It’s highlighted ( to the chagrin of many - including me. ) many of the states better and lesser known fly fisheries, along with angling techniques and fly dressings with a regional tang.

If you have a regional magazine available to you, that covers the areas that you’re interested in, I’d surely investigate it as well as looking into back issue topics and availability.

Best, Dave

I enjoy Flyfishing & Tying along with American Angler and look forward to what they offer.

One I have checked out a couple of times lately is Fly Fusion Magazine.

As well, there are a couple of online mags that I like:

This Is Fly

Catch Magazine

I stopped buying flyfishing mags because I mainly tie and fish warmwater flies. I know some mags have a little section of warmwater but a little isn’t enough to spend the money on. I can find out anything I’m wanting to know here on the net. Especially, here on FAOL. And I don’t do a lot of traveling out of the state or country, so I don’t really need to know about what happens eslewhere. I know I don’t post much, but I’m on this site almost everyday reading. Thanks to FAOL and the people that contribute to it. I REALLY enjoy this site.

Go catch a fish,

Gary

I got the cover and also have a Tiger Trout Article on Page 6.

I subscribe to “Fly Tyer”, Midwest Fly Fishing" & “The Canadian Fly Fisher”. Living in Minnesota, they seem to fit my needs for good articles on fishing, and fly tying.

Yet my favorite magazine is Fly Anlgers Online.

Doftya mentioned Catch Magazine. Its a free online magazine. Doesn’t really get into techniques, flies, or equipment…but I am ALWAYS in awe of the amazing fly-fishing photography! I really do enjoy looking through each new issue. AWESOME!

Fly Fishing & Tying Journal is my favorite. American Angler next. A couple of the other unnamed magazines have evolved into political journals, screaming their views at readers. We get enough of that from other sources, so I expect a flyfishing magazine to focus on the subject. Thanks.

Some interesting views on FF mags.

I currently subscribe to Fly Fishing & Tying Journal and Fly Tyer. I have mixed feeling on Fly Tyer. It seems several issues are glitzy flies or special flies of little use and then suddenly one issue has several good articles and patterns. Kinda runs 1 mag out of 4. Fly Fishing and Tying Journal is more dependable. I often find several articles of interest. However, like others here, I find myself using the internet, including FAOL, for my fly fishing reading and tying and in the future will likely go to no mags.

When I fish a new area I go to a local shop and purchase the local recommended flies for patterns to tie in camp. For magazines, I subscribe to Northwest Fly Fisherman (and always will) for great photography and ideas for next years trips and I also read The Drake for the sheer entertainment.
I do have stacks of magazines that I no longer buy (support) because of what I consider misguided science and politics. Not trying to start anything, just my opinion.
