Fishing Ireland

The wife and I are planning a trip to Ireland in July. Among other things I am hoping to wet a line. Does anyone have any general suggestions? Where? When? that kind of thing. Thanks in advance. DB

I helped a gentleman in Ireland in purchasing a cane rod. He sent me a book on fly fishing Ireland that is absolutely fascinating… but it does pose more questions than it answers.

The biggie has always been salmon, but there is apparently a minor problem with “farmed” salmon in the estuaries causing problems with the wild fish trying to come up the rivers. The trout fishing sounds good… but there is little info as to costs.

There is a great emphasis on the fact that much of Ireland is very remote and no longer settled, which has a lot of positives and negatives.

Ergo, you’re doing the right thing… collecting info.

Do a Google search on “fly fishing ireland” and you will have access to a google of information.

The Winter 2003 issue of Fish & Fly magazine had an article by Galen Mercer on his fly fishing trip to Ireland. Neat photos and paintings by Mercer. If back issues aren’t available email me and I will copy it and send it to you.
