The only day I was free to go out had a constant wind of about 20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. All the other days were forecast for rain. But I could go fishing.
Hiked into the pond and went to the far spot where I would start fishing. Had two rods with me. A Dr. Mike on one and a Hares ear type on the other. Both have worked in this pond for me.
The water where I started casting is about 6 feet deep and starts rising to the shore about 12 feet out. Cast out and started retrieving the fly down about 6 inches sin the water. The water is still discolored from the runoff. On the third cast I got a nice gill. Several more casts did not cause any hookup.
Moved up the pond and tried again. No fish in this area.TRied both flies.
Got to a place where there was no room to back cast and decided to pass this area by.
Got to where I could cast again and was fishing a large area that is about 3 feet deep out to about 18 feet. Cast out over the deeper water and started retrieving. Line felt heavy and set the hook. Saw the crappie come up to the surface and the fly came out. Tried again and after three more casts landed a nice crappie.
Notice that the last two casts that got strikes were perpendicular to the bank. Keep doing this and landed a few more fish, but lost 2 or 3 for everyone that I landed.
The wind had slowly been increasing in speed. Finally got to the point where I could not feel the fish hit.
Had enough to eat and some to share. Was also getting thirsty so I headed home. Had a good time being on the pond.
