Fishing in the Adironcack near Speculator

My wife and I will be staying near Lake Pleasant. I plan on bringing a couple of fly rods. I was wondering what else may be near by stream wise.

AnglerDave-

I’m not familiar with the streams right around Spectator, but if you’re willing to drive a bit you have some great options and some of the best trout fishing in the state:

Within 1 hour:
West Canada Creek (to the west)
Schroon River (to the east)

Within 2 hours:
AuSable River
Boquet River
Saranac River

if you’re interested in a bit of an expedition, another option is a fishing, wildlife, loon watching trip around the Tupper Lake area, about 1 1/2 hours away. You can rent a canoe with your wife, or sit on top kayaks, and it’s something she may enjoy even if she doesn’t fish. There may opportunities to do this around Lake Pleasant, but the area around Tupper Lake is pretty wild and there are a number of different routes from easy 1/2 - 1 day to multiday trips.

If you’re interested in any of the above, shoot me a PM with your email addy and I’ll send some more specifics on those and some other waters nearby that are less heavily fished than those listed, but in the same area/drive time.

For more info on the area right around Spectator, check out the fishing links on www.dec.ny.gov

It’ll have fishing spots, stocking lists (which will at least be a place to start to find trout-n though they may have been cleaned out by bait guys shortly after the truck pulled away, and temps may be too high for them in some streams any way. But they may hold smallmouth. There will also be links to access and contour maps of lakes if you decide to do that. You’ll be in Region 5, Hamilton County, so look under that for stuff close to Lake Pleasant.

Good luck!
