Fishing in Michigan

I reciently moved to Michigan and decided it is time to try to catch my first trout. So the question is when, where and how. I live in East Tawas which is on Lake Huron just south of the mouth of the Au Sable. The Rifle River is also about 30 mins. away from me. I was thinking that I would like to go to the Rifle soon this spring. So my question is what should I use for a fly, is the Rifle wadeable, and how soon should I be able to go out and have a resonable chance to catch a fish.

Thanks for any info/help

Go to Bachelder Spool and Fly in Rose City and take a float down the river. Count the dollars as part of your matriculation into some wonderful fishing. I have canoed the Rifle from Rose City to Omer but I didn’t have a fly rod (18’ canoe, 4 people and camping gear) You’re in great water area and soooooo close to the Au Sable.
Enjoy!

I’ve never fished the Rifle but I just checked it out in Michigan Trout Streams and the authors particularly like the portion above M-55, but they usually like the smaller waters in most rivers. I don’t want to post a long quote from copyrighted material but if you don’t get any more information e-mail me and I’ll reply with more.

all leaders tangle; mine are just better at it than most. Jim

Great fishing on the Rifle just south of Rose city. Should be steelies there now. I’ll be up next weekend.

You are a lucky duck! I grew up in Lansing and always enjoyed visiting the upper parts of the lower penninsula. Wonderful area. There are some great websites. Google Jim Bedford, hes a pretty well known Michigan fly fisherman. You might want to look into Steelhead fishing also. I’m Jealous!
