Fishing around Copper Mountain Co

Since every one is asking for recommendations, I thought I might also. I think I will be around Copper Mountain Colorado some where around the middle of July, and wonder about fishing. I have read a little about Ten Mile Creek and the Blue, but not a lot of specific info. Normally how is the fishing and amount of water in July and what kind of flies should I be starting to tie? As usual I am sure that there are many knowledgeable people who have actually fished these waters.

For the Blue, there will also be Mysis in the 14-18 range and afternoon and evening caddis in the 10-18 range.

Thank you gentlemen!

You won’t be too far from the Eagle River either. Think caddis.

check out gore creek anglers. there are other shops around the vail area but i can’t think of the names at the moment. you should be seeing green drakes and pmd’s as well as what others have listed.the colorado will be with in 1 1/2 hours and the roaring fork in 2.

Lots of great fishing in Summit County! All those previously mentioned, and in additon the South Platte is only an hour or so south on highway 9.

As for flows it is going to vary wildly based on snowpack and other weather conditions (as to be expected). When I was there in 2008 runoff hadn’t hit full steam until well into late June (I was there in early July). As a result the Blue was running over 450 CFM and wasn’t really fishable except in rare locations. Last year when I was there they were having a very wet July and while river flows were closer to normal (150 CFM or less) fishing was still tough. However this year snowpack is lower than normal so runoff may come earlier leaving the rivers closer to their average flows (or even below normal).

If you have any interest in a guide for the day I’d highly recommend Breckenridge Anglers. I went with one of their guys (Dennis) last year and had an excellent time (fished the Middle fork of the South Platte).

As for flies. For the Blue below the dam (in Dillon/Silverthorne) you’ll want mysis patterns. For the Blue through Breck caddis imitations and other small dries.
