Fishing advice for kiwi road trippers

Hey guys and girls

Hopefully I have got the right area here to post my request?

A mate and I are doing a road trip from NYC to LA starting in mid june. Along the way we will be heading to Niagra falls, Chicago and then hopefully end up at some of the national parks - Yellow stone, Yosemite etc before ending up in LA in mid july. We are both mad keen fly fisherman and we are hoping to do a bit of fishing along the way. We realise its a bit of a major haul but would be great to break it up along the way with a bit of fishing.

We are going to be doing the trip on a bit of a budget so hiring a guide is probably out of the question. If we were to take one rod each what weight should we take? a 5? Any advice about basic gear to bring and or locations would be appreciated.

I do a lot of fly fishing in the North Island of New Zealand and have a house in Turangi where the world famous Tongariro River runs through. If anyone offered to take us out fishing along our route/destinations I would be more than willing to reciprocate to anyone that was coming to New Zealand to fish one day.

How about joining us for the Michigan fish-in at the end of June? We’ll be on the Au Sable river in Northern Michigan. Check Gates Au Sable Lodge in the sponsors section for more on the river.

A 5 weight will work just fine. Most popular all-around rod for the US…although some will undoubtedly chime in and try to tell you otherwise.

Enjoy your trip!

… and welcome to the Bulletin Board from the Bitterroot Valley MT.

Left you a visitor message with a couple suggestions.

Be in touch.

John

Hey guys, thanks very much for the advice and offers. Rainbow chaser we may be a bit further along by that stage but will definitley check it out - you guys have got one big country compared to little ol New Zealand.

Again thanks for the advice and to the pms I have recieved. I thought the 5 would be best, is a pretty good rod down under too.

cheers

Karl

If you guys are starting in NYC and then heading up to Niagara you should take I-84 west to RT 17 up to the Catskills and fish the historic trout streams including the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. Plenty of easy public access.

This actually shortens the drive to Niagara some versus taking the NY Thruway from NYC.

I might even join you.

Thanks for the advice and tips Max, will definitley give you a bell if we end up heading that way. The rock scissor paper competition between my mate and I to see who drives us out of NYC is going to be more stressfull than casting to a monster trout in clear water back home thats for sure.

cheers

Karl,

Should you venture southward into the Virginia area I could be convinced with minimal effort to show you a few favorite haunts. My wife and I visited your lovely land about 2 years ago and we could spend hours swapping stories…but again, send me a PM and I’m happy to give you some advice.
