this was a very good post and brought out some very good points" what breaks a 2 wt?" the answer is the angler…I like to land the fish very quick, including running him down, opposing sideways pressure. Never highstiking after the strike and hookup, the way i see it the quicker the release the better chance the fish will recover. My outfitter friend on the Bighorn says “30 seconds” i try for under a minute on my 1 and 3 wts with 5x tippet
I agree with the others that the fighting technique has much more to do with your chances of breaking a rod than fish size. Personally, I managed to shatter a 2 piece 7wt a few weeks ago. I was casting to a very large gar and he bolted as I set the hook. The stress was enough to cause the blank to explode just above the stripping guide. Do i think the rod was heavy enough for the fish? Certainly. The problem was simply too much shock on the rod all at once.
