fishin' sarasota

brookscm,

A good fly shop would be just south of Sarasota in Venice. Casey Key Anglers & Outfitters. Ask for Kevin … tell him Gil sent you. haha! Actually I just met Kevin during the Florida Fish In earlier this month. 'Tis a nice shop though.

Perhaps Harold Hattaway or Slenon will chime in for you as Sarasota is basically their homewaters. I’m a tad further north.

Good luck.

Gil

hey - headin to fla in may and wondering what kinda trouble i can get into with a flyrod in sarasota. i am, of course, a poor man and 5 hundo a day for a guide is simply NOT gonna happen. even if they’re worth it. a good flyshop is in order too…

thanks

Brookscm, and while your at the saey Key shop ask about captain Tony. One of the best charter guys you can have and reasonble too. He will have you double hauling in 15 minutes.

He has the A game.

I live in the area:
When will you be here?

Do not worry about a guide.

Bring at least a 8 weight snook are hungry now.

Harold

If they still publish the annual Sarasota Anglers Guide, get a copy from a tackle shop as it will have most of the areas on maps where fishing access is. Alot of the info is from Steve Gibsons’ Sarasota Herald Tribune outdoors articles for fly fishing. Sarasota County also has a Boating & Angling guide that has more information on places to fish !

brookscm -

I just returned from the Sarasota area. I would second the comments by FL_SKIBUM and old geezer.

I fished with Captain Tony Petrella and had a great time. Learned a lot, caught some fish and felt he was not only fun to be with, but reasonably priced. While fishing from his boat, he went out of his way to show me where I could fish on my own (wading).

Kevin at Casey Key Anglers and Outfitters was also very friendly and shared a wealth of knowledge. Caught fish with his advice, too. Hard to beat.

Check out Tony’s website. I tied some of his flies and enjoyed catching fish on them. (The Commissioner Johnson was the most effective for me on this trip - fished primarily for Trout and Ladyfish)

Enjoy your trip!

Gents:

I’m definitely looking Kevin up in Venice - he’s trying to email me a file (twice), so i owe him some business - happy to do it.

I’ll be fishing (probably) may 14th or 15th in the a.m. i’m bringing an 8wt, floating line and i still have my tippets from previous efforts. just hoping for some hookups this time! oh, and as little wind as possible. (if you don’t ask…)

if you’d care to take me on, i’d be glad to have some company. I may consider capt. tony if my dad wants to go in w/me.

many thanks to the responders!
