First Vise

Morning all and happy easter.

I was browsing through Hook & Hackles vises and came across this vise Super II Rotary Vise

would this be a good vise, for a beginner on a tight budget, to purchase? I mainly would be tying small jigs with it, hook range #4 thru #3/0

Any suggestions/recommendations much appreciated.

Mike

Mike Contact Hook and Hackle and ask if the vise will work with your no 4 thru 3/0 hooks. Making the jigs will take a strong vise, BILL

I notice some say they will hold to 1/0 Griffins to 4/0 the less expensive dont show a hook range.

thanks I’ll do that.

Mike

My experience with those vises is that they are very poor quality. The jaws will spring on you, after tying a bunch of flies in larger sizes, they will no longer hold the smaller hooks. Spend a little more and you won’t have to buy another one after a few months.

I found another vise, in my budget range, A Deluxe Master Vise at JS Fly Fishing which seems to be a pretty good starter vise.

But still shopping around

Hi mickalo

Welcome to the site. I am surprised that you haven’t received more of a response from you post.

I may have asked or read a post on the subject when I first came to FAOL. The best advice I received was (but the best you can afford or buy a used name brand).

The reasoning behind this advise is there are vises that you can get very inexpensively that ā€œmayā€ hold a hook for you at first but ā€œmayā€ let you down a short time later or for hundreds of other problems that come with cheap vises, will cause frustration. With this frustration you will either quit tying or have to buy another vise thus not saving you a dime.

I tie on a Griffin Odyssey Spider that I bought off of E-bay in new condition never used still in the box my wife bought me a Renzeti I cant use this for $25.00. This by no means is the bargain record. That is held by Ohio Tuber, $50.00 for a Renzeti in new I only used it 3 or 4 times condition.

I would suggest and recommend that you post in the Wanted on the Bulletin Board and a price range and see what you come up with. You would be helping a member and yourself at the same time. These are a great bunch of guys that if they cant help you they will find someone that can.

Good Luck!

Respectfully,
Sean

thanks Sean for the good advise. I did post in the Wanted section of the forum a few days ago I believe. I just wish we had some fly shops in my area, but unfortunately not. The nearest one is about a 5-6hr drive from me!

Being new new tying, I’m a bit hesitate, purchasing a high end vise and have it sent on my closest. Start out simple and basic and then work my way up if it pans out

Mike

It cost a bit more than the one you listed but I have been tying for years on a Griffen Spider and have never had a problem with it. I tie from #24 up to # 3/0 on it with out a problem at all. I suspect that one day I may have to change a couple of ā€œOā€ rings but not since I purchased it. Just my two cents. John

Could be a bit slower of a response due to Spring break and Easter.

Welcome to the best site for fly-everything on the web!! Make good use of the resources on the home page, left side. Don’t EVER be hesitant to ask questions. The more you participate, the more you will gain!! Sometimes, depending on who you hear from, it may be correct and useful!!:stuck_out_tongue:

The best information I got on a vise, was to purchase the best you could afford. If you get a really inexpensive vise, it may frustrate the daylights out of you, and get thrown in a closet. If you get a ā€œbetterā€ one to start, it will make fly tying easier, and a lot more fun … and more likely to stay with the addiction (oops! ummm … ā€œendeavorā€). Although I now have ā€œbetterā€ vises, my main traveling vise is the old Griffin I started on. Nothing fancy; sturdy, dependable (kinda like me!!).

Keep in mind, this is a fun adventure! And it’s good to have you here!

I really like rotary tying. I bought a Dan-Vise off of Ebay in the $45 range. You will have to shop a while to find a good price though, but they can be purchased for around $65 most days. Instead of buying one vise then buying another one later, this might be your best option.

mickalo,

After studying the pictures of the 2 vises you are looking at, I think they are both about the same if not the same vise with different names. If that is the case and you are going to purchase it, I would go with the price that Hook and Hackle has. I could be wrong, but, I think they are identical.

Bassman, is this the vise your referring too Odyssey Spider Vise

couldn’t find Griffin vises on Hook & Hackle site.

Mike

Yes that is the one. I did change the spool cradle on mine just because I have one that attached on the shaft with screws. I have had mine for a lot of years so it was about $20 dollars cheaper then. I find it perfect. John

Thanks John. It’s not as expensive as I thought it would be. And it handles the range of hooks I’m looking for. Wonder why Hook & Hackle doesn’t carry the Griffin vises ??

Mike

Hey Mike,

Ah the thrill of the hunt

I went with Griffin Odyssey Spider because it has a lifetime warranty and it’s made in America. It has strong competition from Dan Vise as an entry level vise both with awesome value. If you buy either there will be no reason to replace one; other than to treat yourself and get into heir loom quality stuff (joking and not).

Keep checking e-bay and spell vise (vise and vice) when looking. Don’t be afraid to buy a used one of any of the name brand stuff; they usually all have a life time warrantee which is also why used ones are tough to find and not too discounted. Try Craig’s List too and not just your city or even state. A good one will show up if your not in a hury.

Sean

Hi Sean,

I’ve had some bad experience with E-bay in the past so I stay away from that.

After reviewing some of the various vises in my price range I think the Griffin Odyssey Spider vise will probably be the one I’ll be ordering.

thx’s

Mike

Hey mickalo. First of all welcome to FAOL. This is the greatest fly fishing website you will find. So you can stop looking now.

I’m pretty sure that those two vises you posted are identical. And I think this one from Cabela’s is also the same.

I have had that one from Cabela’s for just over a year now and have tied around 500 flies with it. So I can attest that it works, just not very well. It takes quite a bit of fussing around to get it to hold a hook tightly. I’m constantly adjusting them to get it to hold the hook. When I first got it, I spent over an hour messing around with it, honing the cam surface and such, just to get it to hold the hooks. At first, the cam didn’t operate smoothly enough to allow me to tighten it to hold the hook.

To sum it up, I am already wanting to upgrade.

If you can swing that Odyssey vise, it should work much better for you and should/will last you much longer.

FYI, here is a place with a bunch of reviews of vises.

thanks for all the great advise, appreciate it.

Mike

Hook & Hackles EZ Rotary vise is a great vise for the price…the guy’s at Ohio fly fishing have a review of this and many other vises under 50 dollars…and that one is ranked as one of the best for the money…had I not bought a Renzetti traveler prior to having this vise brought to my attention…I’d prolly have gotten it…

as was stated the Griffin Odyssey vise’s are great vises…I had one for 6 or 7 years and sold it to a member of this site…still kicking my butt on that one…

 Just noticed Tlerm posted a link to the fly fish ohio review!!!
