Prepare your self for the on coming flood of opinions. Here?s what I did. First read the info at this link written by our very own Hans Weilenmann.

After you?ve done that, try out some of the recommended vice in the price range you want that have the features you’re interested in. Check your local shops and fly tying friends to get the widest range to test drive, if possible.
When all was said and done I ended up with a Peak. It had the features I was looking for in the price range I could afford. I’ve been delighted with the vise. Others speak highly of the Dan Vise.

Here?s the FAOL product review of the Peak.

That should keep you busy for a bit. Good luck on your choice.

Second the Renzetti traveler. I bought it four years ago when I started tying and it hasn’t let me down. I’ve had everything in it from midge to tarpon hooks.

Lately I have been using a friends Nor-Vise. I have been thinking of replacing my DynaKing Barracuda and Voyager II with this vise. This is an amazing vise. Here is a link. http://www.nor-vise.com/index.html

There are some great rotary vices out there that won’t break the bank comparatively speaking. Renzetti, Peak, the new Anvil and others are great. The wonderful thing is that every couple of years now a new vise come on the market that is well make and affordable. I believe the $400 and up vices will be a thing of the past eventually. The Norvice is wildly interesting. I’ve seen it in demos at the shows and wonder why all of us are not using it. I’ve never used one but it appears to be a great tool.

I have to roll with the Renzetti traveler opinion. I got one two years ago as my fisrt decent vice. Seems to be a very good basic rotary vise. Mine has a pedestal so that I dont have to look for a picnic table and also it can be scooted all over the table.
Do the home work.
I got mine for about $150 new.
Happy tying.

In December I bought a new vise and think it’s great. Have no complaints and it is…
Renzetti Saltwater Traveler with cam jaw. It cost a little over $200 I think.

Mine is the “C” clamp style.

dead fly…you have a pm…

Thanks for all the info. I ended spending a couple hours last night looking over reviews on different viceses. The ranzeti traveler does look great with great reviews. Dynaking also has a traveler that looks pretty nice. And I like regals vices. On the lower end danavice has a nice lower priced option; I’m not so sure about a plastic vice however. Alot to go over befor I acually pick one up… _Duane

If you are concerned about the Danvise, contact Al Beatty. Here is his website link http://www.btsflyfishing.com/ Besides selling flytying tying videos, materials and tools, including the Danvise, he and his wife, Gretchen, are famous fly tying masters. Al uses the Danvise.

I have a DynaKing travel series vice, Voyager II. It is a great vice in my opinion, but the pedestal version is on the heavy side for a ‘travel’ type vice, whereas, the c-clamp would make it a better traveling companion.

Duane, don’t worry about the durability of the DanVise, I’ve had one for about 8 or 9 years now, i think, and it’s tied thousands of flies. It’s the one clamped to my table now, and I have 2 Regals, and a MVP vise.

Thanks for that rg/ar. I have been looking at a few both on line and at cabela’s. I like the regal, the renzetti travelar look real nice. But I keep comming back to the danvice. The price is nice of course, but really I just love the way it rotates, it seems to have nice tension when rotating if needed. And it kinda really has a sorta ugly duckling thing going for it.
So we’ll see; I really do like the renzetti, but for now as my fist vice upgrade I may just findmyself with a danvice this weekend.

I used a Danvise all of last year and never had a problem with it. It’s a great vise for the money for sure.

Guess I should also tell you I bought the small work station that comes with it at lots of stores and could use the clamp on the station to clamp down on the rod and took off the “C” clamp as that station has the place for it. I think the vise and station was about $139.

I think cabela’s sells that. I’m sure other places as well… does look like a nice station. Does it come with the tools? Might be a good deal.

I ent out and bought the danvise tonight. What am amazing littel vise. I really love this thing, doubt I can ever go back to a non rotary vise again.

I have a danvise and it’s AWESOME! I have tied several hundred jigs and files with it and had zero problems.

Hope you got it from Al Beatty as he is a sponsor here. Anywhooo…if you go to Al’s site, or call him, they sell a video on how to tie using a true rotary. It is all done on the Danvise which you now own. Can’t get much better than a good long video on how to tie flies on the vise you have.

Gemrod

Sounds like a great idea. I will have to look that up. Certainly couldn’t hurt… lol

I have the Dyna-King Barracuda Junior and it’s an excellent rotary vise with hook holding power second to none. Comes with a lifetime warranty from an excellent customer service department. You should be able to get the DK Barracuda Trekker on e-bay for around $175. Two of my three daughters tie using their DK Voyagers which is a great beginner’s vise.

The reason I stated that the DK Customer Service is excellent is I bought one of the DK Voyager vises on e-bay for $80. It was a C-clamp that was missing the bottom head of the screw that clamps the vise to a table. I called DK customer service and explained that I bought it off e-bay and it was missing a part. They sent the part to me NO CHARGE! Something to think about before buying a product IMHO. Take-care.
