First in a looong time!

I finally got to go down to the local pond and fish.
Since I’m still in school and had wrestling everyday after school and every saturday, there was no time to get out.

It warmed up quite a bit this past week, making the water warmer. Since wednesday its been getting colder out.

I went down to the pond and fished for a couple hours. I didn’t know what to use since I only have about 5 or 6 flies. I put on a nymph and had some success with the gills. I caught 5 gills and they were sooo much fun it was unbelievable. I never had fun catching gills before but I guess it must be that I haven’t been out for almost 5 months.
I went back to the little fly box and put on some tan fly, maybe a caddis? I casted about 10 times with no luck. I was getting it out about 30 to 40 feet, really far for me since it’s my first year. I was getting really frustrated because my line kept getting knots in it every 5 or so casts. On about my tenth cast I finally caught something other than a gill, thank God, it was a Brook Trout, a nice fat 14 incher. God must be on my side today, I caught 1 more Trout, a Rainbow this time.

I decided to go to a different spot on the lake. I kept the caddis? on and had more luck with it. On the sixth cast I hooked up with a Largemouth Bass, my first one ever, yipee, it was about 14 inches long and weighed maybe 1 1/2 lbs. Boy was she a fat one. I was so happy to finally get a bass on any type of rod, especially on my fly rod.

I stayed in that spot for about another 20-30 minutes walking up and down casting in a different spot every time. I didn’t catch anything after that bass but boy did I have the time of my life.

I had an awesome day even with it being pretty chilly out. I can’t wait till next time.

Thanks for reading,
Nick

Nick,

Thanks for writing and posting your trip report!

Are you in high school? When I was in high school I once confided to an English teacher that I wanted to write stories about fishing and other outdoor activities. At the time, I wanted real bad to write a story about bass fishing with plastic worms (a new lure in the early 1960s). She chuckled and gave me one of those looks like I was stupid for wanting to write about something as dumb as plastic worms, and her rebuff embarrassed me so much I never wrote the story. It took me a number of years before I finally decided to hell with what anyone else but fellow outdoors people think, and I just started letting the words come out.

So again, thanks for writing and posting your news. Keep your hand in it. It’s a cool thing to see guys writing at a young age.

Joe

“Better small than not at all.”

Yea, I’m still in high school, this is my last year. I’m more of a drawer than a writer, but I always get high grades whenever I get to write about what I like. My english teacher would love it if I asked to write something, she is a very nice lady. She loves reading things that us kids write. Sorry you were unlucky with your english teacher, all of us can’t be fortunate enough to have teachers that like when kids want to write.

Thanks,
Nick

Keep Writing like Joe says! I am 50 and have been writing about my life experiences and stories about my childhood, family members and everyday things for a long time. It is a way to keep history alive for people many years from now. I encourage my son FisherKid93 to write. I like writing about our fishing and camping times together. You know, if diaries and stories were’t written by the soldiers and families during the Civil War era, we would never really know what those times were really like.
Thanks!! Kahuna

hey joe, whatever you do, don’t stop writing now. i really enjoy your articles in warmwater and can appreciate the yotes and owl you spoke of in this week’s articles as well a your many other observances. thank goodness i don’t require catching fish to enjoy fishing. you and rick get me thru the long cold winters! keep up the great work.

Nick, even though its 18 degrees here in Bliss Ny and the pond is still frozen, you warmed me right up. Great post of your adventure and I hope your good fortune continues.
