First Grass Carp...FINALLY!

Was fishing last friday with a buddy and his kids. Withen 20mins of getting the 5 year old girls in line in the water, she started screaming that she caught a bluegill (she calls everything blugill) She was having a hell of a time getiing this little blue gill out of the water. The whole time its fighting and splashing making a huge commotion. When we get in on shore on a tiny little princess rod and reel from walmart. Its a 4lb carp. know I caught carp before much larger than 4lbs so I know its not that big. but the look on this girls face and the smile that finally faded about a day later. Made it seem like a 600lb tuna. A very proud day for my friend to see his little girl catch such a monster. I wish I could find the picture.

Now I’m suffering from a bad case of Grass Carp envy:( I live on a lake that has about a dozen grass carp just about that size but I’ve never been able to get them to look at anything. Usually by the time I see them from my kayak, they’ve seen me and all I really see is a swoosh of mud as they take off. Your story and photos have inspired me to tie up some of those leeches and give it another whirl.

Thanks for sharing and all the photos really added to the story.

Wow man, that is awesome!! Contrats, you have achieved what some of us are still dreaming about.
(sigh) one day, one day.

Ok Mr. Blackman,
Let me write that down:

  • “tiny little princess rod and reel from walmart”. Got it! I’m on my way there to get me one, maybe that way I’ll be able to catch me a carp. LOL
Joking aside, nothing better than the look on a kid’s face (or grown man LOL) catching their first fish. And by the way, a wee tiny carp will give a descent fight.

Thanks fellas!
Well, we’ve been badgering those grass carp some more lately. One day we had about 5 takes…Ending up in 2 broken lines for Jenni, and the rest just didn’t stay on the hook very long. Another day, I hooked one on a tan colored boa yarn leech with a marabou tail…and handed the rod to Jenni. She fought it for 10 minutes, and was getting the fish tired out, when it decided to surf the shallow rocks along shore, and cut the line on us AGAIN! They sure are finicky!! And tough to land, even if you get one to hit! Even had one (pretty sure it was one, cuz whatever it was was HUGE) take a fly at night, but after a couple minutes of it roaming the pond, the barbless hook came out (possibly my own error).

They sure are fun, though!!:stuck_out_tongue:

congratulations. 36" fish in your backyard. Cool neighbourhood you live in.

Ditto, man if i had a nice pond in my yard i would never go inside!

Great stuff!
I’m still trying to get one myself. Hopefully I’ll have some pics of my own.

Congrats on a great fish, Dave! Haven’t seen you on BBG lately. Now I know what you’ve been up to!
