Pulled in from Florida at 1:10 p.m. Monday. Wife said she was going to throw in a load of laundry and take a nap. I had a better idea. At 2:26 I threw a fly into a farm pond and at 2:36 I had this one on the bank.
20" and shoulders. Have caught some good numbers since, but this one is leading the pack.
There you go. Warren called it… it’s a 456. Actually, I think 4.7 would be right in the ball park. Maybe 5+ right before the spawn. Anyway… makes no difference. Fun fish to catch on the long stick.
Awesome Iowa bass! A pair of 19-inchers are still my biggest on fly-fishing gear. Your estimate exactly matches my experiences (with spinning gear)…a 20" bass in good shape will be right around 5lbs +/-.
How 'bout a close-up of the pattern you used to catch it? I need all the ideas I can get! ;o)
Good eye Lotech… White River HCIII. I’m real happy with it - but to be honest, here in the Midwest, when you fill the spool is usually the last time you ever see your backing. Here, as the old adage says, the fly reel basically is a line holder. Nice smooth reel, though. I’d buy another.
I passed on the sugar, nighthawk. Her breath smelled of fish.
Here you go…Early season bass (and catfish ;)) flies.
First - I know - I’m no “arteest” - they are crude. But, they are designed for one thing. These flies will catch bass - and big bass.
I tie these up to 7" long. Some are tied with dumbells or chain bead eyes - some with cone heads and I usually epoxy the heads. Lately, I tie most everything on a SC15 Gamakatsu in 1/0. You stick them with one of them and they stay stuck.
Notice a couple of these are tied with the red “wool” albasurf so kindly passed along. Thanks Kari.
Really like the flies and they do look like bass flies to me and the tying is good. When I look at the picture you posted of the flies, I see the old “jig-n-pig” combo which was and still is a great bass getter! Thanks for posting…
