Headed out to a pond that I can drive to with 20 feet of. Loaded the canoe and all the rest of the stuff I take. I have fished this pond before. Got the canoe off the truck and everything loaded into the canoe.
Got the canoe out on the pond and started casting with one rod. The other rod I had a jig head fly on that was a large zebra midge type thing. Had this out with the fly down about 3 feet in the water.
This pond is still very turbid from the dirt being washed in. A white fly disappears about 6 inches down in the water. But it is a day to fish. The rod I am casting has a fly with turkey body feather barbs tail, black alpaca body with red wire rib, turkey tail feather wing case and peacock head with a 1.5 mm bead head.
The fish are not being nice. They are hitting the loop on the orange fly line. This happens just as the line hits the water. Time to change and I put on an orange fly with a copper wire rib and bead chain eyes. Get several fish to hit, but the bites are light and very few come to hand.
Keep moving around the pond and having fish hit the fly very lightly. Get about 1 of 15 to hand. I am netting these as they are barely lip hooked. Lost a few trying to swing them into the canoe.
Did pickup a few nice gills on the black fly, but many of the got off before I could net them. Kept moving around the pond and finding fish spread all over. The fish are not hitting very hard.
The water is about two feet deeper than it has been for the past few years. A benefit of the drought ending. I am hoping with the grass growing now in the pastures that the rain water will come in clearer.
Decided it was tie to head home and get some other things done. Had fish to eat and to share.
