caught my first blue water beasts on flies over the New Years week end!! I was down in OBX and went out on Dec 31st. Had a blitz of epic proportions!! Blues all over the place. Just got into this salt water fly fishing this year.
Quite a nice fish to play with. Once they get the hook they often go 90 degrees to you and make the fight a tough one. Just watch your fingers as they have teeeeeth.

Jed, Thats exactly what they did. These were blues between 8-16 lbs. One fish bent the hook at 90 degrees!!

Sperzonkers,
Got a dumb question for you. Where is OBX? 8T
OBX-Outer Banks, NC
HI-Hatteras island
OINC-Ocracoke Island North Carolina
Watch for these windshield/bumper stickers and there are others I’m sure.
Sperzonkers2,
Good gosh!!! Can’t imagine a bluefish of that size on a fly. What a catch that would be. Congrats.

Most folks (including me at first) find it surprising that we get bluefish here in southwest Florida. They’re much smaller than noreasters–usually 3 or 4 pounds–but they surely are fun on a fly.
I was guiding a fellow from New Jersey last week for snook under the lights around docks in Venice. The bluefish were so thick he could hardly make a drift without hooking up. Between the snook and blues he caught 37 fish in less than three hours. He finally literally yelled “uncle” and we went home because his shoulder was sore from playing fish.
Yep, Blues make me happy!
