finished mine last night

This is my first build. It came out better than i expected but not as good as i had wished. its a 2 piece 9 ft 3/4 weight tiger eye from sevier. the reel seat is shiny gunsmoke with rosewood insert, and the guides are shiny gunsmoke TiCh from American Tackle. The wraps are olive drab, but the rod finish made them darker :frowning: .

The pictures didnt come out very good. later i will add better pics showing the guides and wraps

If you don’t want the thread to darken, you must either use NCP thread or color preserver. If you don’t, the finish turns the thread anywhere from a dark translucent on the dark end to almost transparent on the light end. If you use white nylon thread without color preserver, it will almost disappear on you. White silk will disappear on you.

From what I can see, it looks good!

Looks good. To answer your question, yes, I’m hooked. Already thinking about my next rod.

I used the wrong rod finish on my wraps. When it said it will keep my brights bright, I assumed it was a color preserver. Now that I look back at the specs, i realize its not. I still have another blank already here. A 4 piece 2 wt that I am going to try and build for a possible trip back to Colorado in July. It will be great for those little trout in the shallow streams. Ill have to take better care on my wraps the second time around. And then I will need to build an ultra light spinning rod oh and a casting rod… the list goes on. I should have done all of this in the winter when the lakes were frozen over.

Coming through Denver?

I don’t build rods, but I DO tie Half a**ed flies. I love catching fish (and I catch fish) on my flies, & that makes it that much more special to me. The fact that you built the rod speaks volumes & the fish don’t care about aesthetics, although what I saw in the pics looks just fine.
Good job!

Kevin,
Im not sure where we are going. We are probably going to Gunnison are or Lake City area. We will probably get off of I-70 at Limon either place we go. Although our destination is still up in the air. We are looking for somewhere where there wont be people, we can hike and find our own place to camp next to a trout stream
Those who say that the journey is the most important part, have never driven all the way across Kansas.

Thank you everyone for the kind words on my rod.

I personally like the translucent look you get without using CP. You have to remember to use brighter colors because they will darken. For example, I use candy apple red on Tiger Eye blanks, but when the finish is applies they turn ruby red.

I can’t tell from the pictures, but it looks like you may have had some epoxy leak out around the reel seat and the butt cap. It may be just the picture, but if that did happen, use some denatured alchohol to clean up any runout.

yea i got a little epoxy on the reel seat just around the cap. I have alcohol at work and am bringing it in tomorrow to clean it up a bit. I brought it up to the pond today and it casts good. it looks good in the sun, but it didnt catch a single fish.
